Interesting thread.
I'm on the CCW team. Anise, anise/tuna, anise plus, Mikes glo scent anise......I was thinking about trying Uzo.....
I use Addicted salmon blend and garlic too.
FWIW - I LIKE scents that wash off. We use oils most of the time. Even the water soluble scents on hardware. Sure it wears off, but it gives a nice burst that I've seen work. Plus even I can smell the oils after the lure has been in the water for a while, so the fish can smell it. If we use the gels it's a little on the hooks or on the belly of a plug.
I also think that as long as the scents are stored properly and smell like they should, they are good. I remember the guy from Procure saying that they last for years. He would sell more if he said they went bad. I believe him.
Researching scents is fascinating.
According to the people at Berkley, oils make terrible scents. Fish don't "smell" oil very well. Besides, oil floats.
Fun read.

I tend to start from the premise that have a keen sense of smell to the point they can smell their way back to their spawning grounds, it makes sense (scents) that having scent on a lure that smells appetizing to them should pique their curiosity, then the shape or action of the lure will either mimic something they eat or tick them off and generate a strike response.

A few years ago I recall Bob Ross saying something about using patchouli for scent. He seems to do pretty well so I figured I'd give it a try. I was fishing anchored in the upper river and had a homemade spinner with a drop or two of patchouli on it. Five minutes later I had a nice clipped steelhead in the box...wow, i might be on to something! I stayed with that spinner and scent for that day and a few trips afterward, never getting a sniff. What I did get though for half a season was a boat that smelled like a head shop.
You were only targeting the older hens with that scent!

I use NW Bait and Scent salmon and garlic stuff. I think it works but I pull herring a lot and this year in particular all natural smell is working...nothing added..
Well I shouldn’t say nothing as I brine the bait but never add scent stuff

Also fished wind river w prawns and my bites all came on the unscented stuff

Shane does put out a good product but I have noticed much better results in the summer/fall w scents
