Good:
1/2 on a seemingly slow day! Rotten Banana mini got it done. Missed a rod-in-hand bite on a naked 3.0 spinner. Anytime the bite dies, we always pair down to a dark 3.0 blade. It’s usually good for a window.

Not so good:
Crushed a jumping sturgeon at the mouth of Multnomah Channel on our morning ride out. Broke my prop.

How does that even happen!?

I think we’re close to “wide open.” I feel it
Nice fish there ! Wow, that's crazy that a sturgeon hit your prop, the chances of that happening must be a million to one. At least that fish help make up for it a bit. What do you mean by a dark spinner or naked spinner? Are you talking about putting a Black Blade on it? Or are you fishing it without a 360?

SlimeRocket - in my mind, I have (3) different kinds of soft spinners.
  • Hoochie Spinners
  • Spinners w/tubing body
  • Naked spinners (2-6mm beads, nickel ball, clevis.)

I’ll usually run a hoochie spinner or a spinner with some body. But if there are a ton of fish around and none are going, I’ll run a naked spinner and I’ll size down the blade to a 3.0. And yes… I’ll run a dark blade as to make it appear even smaller. Something to make a fish say “Fine. That will take the least amount of effort to kill compared to these big presentations.”

Give it a try. We favor the VIP Outdoors Dark Knight I think it’s called. That little bas*ard annihilates fish.

If you want pics, let me know.

Are you sure you didn't hit the deadhead at the HOC. It moves around with the tide but stays within 100' of the north dolphin.

Good job on the fish and thanks for the tip.

Devonian - 100% sure. We saw the sturgeon porpoise 5-10ft in front of the boat doing 25-30mph. I was like “oh sh**!” I thought for sure he’d catch the hull but it was just a motor thud. Driven that route 100+ times. Deadhead doing 25-30 would have done way more damage, I think.

Okay, I see what you mean now thanks for the explanation , what you say makes sense. So when you're running naked Spinners are you running without a 360 ? I did check out that VIP Dark Night spinner on their website it looks like a killer!

SlimeRocket- Yes still behind a 360. Run one short (22”) leader behind a 360 with a short bumper for erratic action. And one long (32”) leader behind a 360 with a long bumper for smooth rolls.

When we get them like that, we feel intelligent. When we don’t, we feel like it’s not for a lack of trying to think of literally everything and we sleep better at night.

That's pretty smart, that way you know you've covered all the bases. Thank you for the good tips, much appreciated!

At 10am the fish checker at chinook landing said we were the first fish he checked. Said fish was a 20" jack. We had another takedown come off halfway to the boat. That was it for us. Didn't see any other action.

This ain't right.
Launched just before 11 with my boys. Still just your jack checked. Thought that couldn’t have been right and asked him to repeat himself…
Trolled two rods for about 2 hours during the time we had available. Couple cycles from the top of reed to a little west of 50. No chances and didn’t see anything. Nice boat ride.

While we're not distracted with piles of fish pictures, just a friendly service announcement I've been meaning to post up:

At Chinook Landing, every morning I've launched this season, I don't think I've seen a single other rig turn their headlights off when launching in the dark. We need to get back in that habit. Though I'm sure most of the guilty parties aren't on here, but was worth a shot.

I've never heard this before but am all for making someone's life easier... is it specific to CL or just in general so you dont blind the living @#$& outta everyone else trying to launch and ruin their night vision?

Typically considered standard courtesy at most launches. CL seems to go through phases. There's times I've seen everyone doing it - might be more following everyone else's example. But yeah, trying to back down with someone's headlights in your mirrors is a whole lot harder than the alternative.

Ah I almost always use a single lane ramp here so never had to worry much about it and never needed bother launching in the dark in North Dakota 😂

Thanks for the reminder though. My wife backs me down all the time in the dark and that drives her nuts!

That's some crazy AI photo editing. Nice work on the fish!

I've also been enjoying fishing away from the fleet. 3 takedowns, one lost right at the boat Saturday afternoon on a new to me troll. Fished same spot yesterday morning and this morning for no more bites. Very very strange given number of fish.

Hope it turns soon.
Yeah, Dad's a little technologically challenged, and unfortunately his finger was in all three pictures he took despite me telling him beforehand to keep his fingers out of the lens. I had to use some 'eraser' feature to edit it out. It looks better than his finger, but still odd. Bummed me out, because otherwise it's a great picture.
