Started with 5" Senko with a 1/0 EWG, and had no problems with getting hookups. What I had problems with was deep hooking. A 3/0 fixed that. So far, I've only thrown these unweighted, with a nose-hook. Might try whacky rigging them this year.
With the 4" Senko, I've always used a #4 Yamamoto Splitshot hook, which is a 'circle hook'. Reason is that I can throw it on lighter line, lighter rod, easy on the old elbow, and it's perfect for either nose-hooked or whacky rigged. I just watch for a little ripple on the water and change to whacky rigging as fast as I can. Wind = ripple = less light penetration = more active fish. Whacky rig anchors the bait in the water column much better, so feel of bites is actually better than nose-hooked.
I haven't tried 3" to any extent, but have some to use for Drop Shotting...probably whacky rigged. Due to water depth (where I fish), wind should not be required. I'll use the circle hooks. One real good feature to the circle hooks is that the points just don't get hammered over on rocky bottoms. C&R, Steve
