I am curious which spots these days are the most prone to snaggers, flossers, and poaching   these days, with fish runs and low water. It's that time of year again..
Also, if you had a positive experience while wearing a No-Snag shirt, I'd like to hear about it.
Please PM me if have some info or a good story you can share with me. I appreciate it.
Thanks,
GBS

Any and all spots on the river that have deep water for the fish to hold in till the fall rain comes!!! Hate to say it but no river is exempt from 1 or more trying to "hook" these kegged up fish!! Its just not something thats ever going to go away unless we as a whole speak up and stop this behavior!!! :depressed:

I am also curious what percentage of fish, especially silvers, are caught legally in these tribs with hatcheries.
I have minimal experience fishing silvers in these tribs and have been told that the legal success rate is very low relative to the number of fish present.

Was on eagle creek today at bonnie lure park. I was there before sunrise with five others. Guy walks right up next to me with a 6-7ft leader, big chunk of pencil lead, small black corkie and a huge hook.....first cast he yells fish on. It was tail hooked....imagine that. I fished another 10 minutes and watched him snag another two fish then left in disgust.

I went upstream toward the hatchery to one of the upper bridges. I looked down from the bridge at the deep pool with holding fish stacked in it. i saw no less than 3 coho with hooks/corkies broken off on various parts of their backs.

I dont think I will ever bank fish Eagle creek for coho again. Its snaggers paradise.

i have to say i like to hang out in these spots when i can and remind everyone how well my cell phone works to call the game wardon
and there isnt enuf enforcment to stop it so we all have to do our best to help everyone play by the rules and enforce good fishing tactics before they close the good holes to fishing to all of us

have only caught 1 coho. it was on eagle creek. in white water that no-one else had fished. people who know what they're doing don't fish the snagger infested spots, or at least thats what i've observed

Re: what are some of the more problem snagging hol

lets see here some specific bad spots

North Fork Lewis at the hatchery nearly all the fish hooked there are snagged i'd venture to guess upwards of 90%

The entire Satsop river that is accessible to bank fishermen, though some dark chums actually bite all the coho caught on corkies are snagged, plenty caught fair on spinners, eggs and plugs

The Humptulips near the hatchery 75% of all species are snagged the 25% that are caught on things other than corkies are snagged

Washougal river at oak park 100% of all chinook caught there are snagged,

Kalama river lower fly only water SNAGFEST!

Lorens drift on the Trask.. been a snagfest every time i have seen it.

I know guys say it happens but i in my 25 years of salmon and steelhead fishing have NEVER seen a Salmon other than a chum caught legally on a corky without bait..

Re: what are some of the more problem snagging hol

Need to add the Clay Banks on the lower Rogue to the list. When the Fall run comes in about a dozen guys in prams posing as fly fishermen floss the chinooks as they mill around in the tidewater hole.

This past year they didn't even bother to cast, just let the line lay on the bottom until a fish accidently picked up the line/leader in it's mouth. Some fishermen! Then they show off the fish to the tourists as they go up river on the mail boats!

Same thing happens on the Chetco.

That's insane! I hook fish right in their kisser all of the time with corky and yarn (no scent, no bait), and I don't fish those deep slow holes or excessive leaders.

Nothing fishy about straight up corky and yarn for any salmon/steelhead in my mind.

I can second this for winter steelhead. More hooked in the mouth than snagged if your drifting them correctly instead of just casting out and letting them sit there until you feel a fish and yanking.

Re: what are some of the more problem snagging hol

My girlfriend and myself just turned in a couple coho snaggers up here. We were fishing Dolly Varden in one of the rivers closed to salmon. There is one hole, right above rock dam that alot of coho stack up into, when we got there there was a father teaching his son how to snag coho with a halibut rod and a pixee. cast to the head of the pool and rip it through the school, fish on every time. There were some dolly fishermen below him, and i watched him get one of his snagged fish wrapped around one of the dolly fishermens fly lines while he was fighting a VERY nice dolly... I called the F&G so that he could see and hear me, didnt think they would answer as we only have one in town and he's always out, so i wanted the guy to know that he was getting reported, but the Gamer was in and as soon as i got off the phone, the snagger and his son left glaring at me the whole way, but I got a licence number and he got a nice visit about a half an hour later.

Re: what are some of the more problem snagging hol

The Rogue river banks are full of flossers- very few bankies
know how to fish- I'm a reformed snagger-very similiar experience to the line snagging article in STS.

Solve the problem by limiting leader to 3 feet- 36" rule
by the way the Chetco is full of line snaggers acting like fly fisherman. They count down and then jerk.

The new wave on the Rogue is the double Extra long leader
1 hook about 8 feet another hook about 6 feet behind that.

:yeahthat:

My dad taught me young, how to fish with corkie and yarn. He also taught me a proper leader length, is 2 feet for high or off-color water and 3 feet for low and clear. He also taught me how to "feel" the bite. It's been very productive for me, for years.

Re: what are some of the more problem snagging hol

Rob. Good call on the rivers you mentioned. I do have to point out that I do on occasion fish straight corkies for salmon and have done very well. I use 18'' to 20'' leaders and 95% of the fish have hooks inside the tooth line. I do see way too many people trying to camo snagging by putting a corkie on. Size 14 corkie and a 7 / 0 hook ???? Hmmmm wonder what that guy is up to. I feel like I am taking my life in my own hands sometimes these days but I get in every snaggers face when I see one.

Why not teach those the right way to fish. I also was on eagle Creek and It was a great. I caught my First Oregon Salmon and My first Coho in my life. I had a great time and yes I was using a coorkie and yarn but not a huge hook and I think that as a beginner at the Salmon and Steelhead fishing thing I am doing as best as I know how. But to have name calling and not be willing to help a guy out really sucks. I wish some of you guys here would do like you keep telling others in your posts just get out and fish more and if you see illeagle activity report it. My biggest concern once I got that fish on the beach was if I had it caught leaglly.
No unfortunatly I did not get to brag about my firast fish of the season with out all the snaggers this and snaggers that but, oh well. Lets get out there and teach the new guys how to do it right and then if they do not follow the laws report it and let it be. I thought fishing was supposed to be fun not a thing to do on the weekends and complain about on the weekdays
Thank you for a great forum for finding some techniques and some great places to fish.
And as for the upper Eagle you are right it is great as long as you avoid the large deep hold up holes.

Re: what are some of the more problem snagging hol

I have fished corky and yarn and caught more fish in the mouth than I can count on both hands. I think it is unfair to rag on corky fisherman because some people have never seen fish caught on them.I have caught fish on the trask and north fork lewis drifting corky and yarn with egg or sandshrimp scent!!! And yes it was in the mouth. although most of my fish come from bobber and eggs or off the anchor. I still catch silvers every year on corky and yarn. One thing I dont do is fish corkys in still water only on the drift thats when you tend to snag them!! It happens some times!! FISH ONLY BITE BAIT????????? YEAH RIGHT :argue:
