using air duct for stove pipe

Has anyone used the air duct pipe for a stove pipe on a wall tent stove? I was looking for a 5" stove pipe, and they didn't have that at Home Depot, but they did have the air duct. I'm talking about the galvanized sheet metal stuff, not the plastic. It looks to be pretty much the same thing, just a lighter gauge of metal.

I'm sure somebody has tried it in the past, just wondering how it worked out.

It'll work just fine. I had a telescoping stove pipe in break down wood stove we used in the wall tent. It got crushed too many times and had one made by a local sheet metal shop out of galvanized sheet metal.

Lots of local tin [whoopsydaisies!] (pretty much anyone who does HVAC duct) could hook you up too.

i have used it, they sell it in a heavy gauge.do you have the rubber 5" roof jack in your tent or a woven fiber 5" one. i would look into enlarging the tent to use 6" before i bought 5"

if im not mistaken the stovepipe hole is oval shaped, a 5"x6" hole is for 4" pipe 6"x7" is for 5" 7"x8" is for 6" pipe. you want the pipe free in the hole or when the wind flaps the tent, it pulls the pipe apart.

Rule of thumb is to have steel piping all the way out of the tent, then use galvanized from there if you want. The galvanized pipe puts off toxic fumes, even if you do burn it off. Depending on the makeup of the metal, some galvanized is worse for fumes than others. When it comes to stove pipe, you don't want to do it half baked. Fumes will be something to avoid. Also depeding on the cleanness of the wood you burn, air duct will collect suit and ash more, leading to a higher chance of a fire. So, I would make sure you do it right. Try a place like Salem Tent & Awning to get steel pipe made for the tent, the galvanized pipe can be picked up at places like Wilco Farm Stores and such.

Chris,
I'd call these guys and price the regular stuff. Ask them for the kind that you can take apart, that way you can put all the sections inside one another. The length of one of our early packers stoves was long enough so all the pipe fit inside the stove.

Sadly, I have experience in this area and it's not pretty. We replaced the stove pipe elbow that comes out of the back of the stove one year with lightweight galvanized "dryer" pipe.

Well into the wildernes in Idaho before being test fired it melted almost immediately causing much consternation within the tent. Only through very creative Leatherman work on available tin cans did the problem get resolved. Needless to say I was not the most popular person in camp for awhile.
Get the right stuff before you go. Check some of your other local builing supply places or a stove maker in your area.

If it says it is for air ducts, don't use it.
Ace hardware has stove pipe. Or check out a stove shop or one ofthe wall tent manufacturers.

Just because it is galvanized doesn't mean it is for air ducts or is thinner. The stove pipe that Salem Tent and Awning sells for stoves is thin gauge galvanized steel. If you look at most of the pictures of wood stoves on the internet, they show galvanized pipes.
I have 6" pipe for one stove that is not galvanized.
My other stove uses 5" pipe. I've yet to see any non-galvanized pipe in 5" yet. If I did, I would get it.

I my Home Depot the dryer duct is made from aluminum. Not steel. This could be why it melted.
