On the low tax states, is that due in large part because of sales tax instead of income tax? I can't imagine California being a low tax state... Washington isn't any better, but the chart shows it being so...
Negative, it includes all taxes. They say California is a lower tax state for married couples as compared to single. Take a look at the Fidelity link at the bottom, very insightful.

According to Grok, which I guess doesn't really surprise most people.

California is not one of the lowest-taxed states in the US. In fact, it consistently ranks among the highest based on overall state and local tax burdens, income tax rates, and sales tax rates. This perception might stem from myths about California's progressive tax system being "moderate" for low-income households (due to rebates and exemptions), but even then, it doesn't qualify as low-taxed compared to national averages.
...
If you're in a specific income bracket or tax type, California might feel less burdensome than stereotyped—but it's objectively high-taxed. For personalized estimates, tools like the Tax Foundation's calculator can help.

I think it's like the best place to live rankings. It depends on what you include in the ranking.

Looking only at income taxes tells you about income taxes, which is naturally what an investment firm would focus on

When total tax burden is considered, Oregon is middle of the pack. Google your favorite source. Total burden is calculated various ways and Oregon typically resides between #20 and #30 out of all 50 states. The Tax Foundation website mentioned above is one example of this

Middle of the pack on average because 40% of the population doesn't pay much of anything. I can assure you Oregon, especially tri-county is very high for the business owners that create jobs and get **** done.

Oregon as a whole ranks #28 for business tax on the website mentioned by jimh406. Middle of the pack. Lots of metro areas nationally have extra tax. They also have extra market and other perks. If not good enough, only you can change where you choose to setup shop

Hiking path? You mean urban campground.
Obviously, you’re not from around here. Happy Valley is one of the richest areas anywhere. there are no homeless there. There’s rich entitled people who get a walking path.

Remove the sales tax rank and our overall rank is bottom of the barrel. Even the "sales tax" is a gross receipts tax that punishes the business owner more than the consumer. Small business makes up the majority of the Oregon economy. Most small businesses file sub-S. In other words, the business income is a passthrough to the owners which pay a very high individual income tax rate in Oregon.

You can try smoke and mirrors all you want, the business climate in Oregon sucks ass.

And I did move our business out of Multnomah County at a huge expense so thank you for that advice.

Yep, Portland destroyed the Multnomah county portion of our biz, we left. Now Oregon is about to kill the rest of it.

Nope. Wrote my state senator multiple times. Big companies doing layoffs in her district (Intel, Nike, Edwards). She doesn't care & proceeds as we are not even here.
I had a state rep use my business(as a success in her district  which its not) in her newsletter. I was so ****ed but dare not say anything due to the almost certainty I would get every regulatory and tax agency down my throat and up my az as retribution.

The article is confusing. But read it again, it only talks about income taxes and never mentions sales tax, property tax, or other "fees" that are taxes. Its a poorly written article and I'd expect better of Fidelity. Since Oregon has no sales taxes and get a higher percent of its revenue from income taxes, this will make its tax burden look unusually high.

Of the more thorough analysis of state tax burdens I've seen, Oregon usually is above average, but not the top 10. Usually around 16th to 20th highest. The range from high to low, if one throws out the highest and lowest outlier states isn't that great. You could move to another state and save 2 or 3% in total taxes, but considering everything about where one lives, it would really need to be worth it for that amount of money.

Since Oregon has no sales taxes
Well, we may not have something called a sales tax, but we do have the more insidious 'Corporate Activity Tax' (CAT) that taxes every supplier in the supply chain, ultimately raising prices effectively like a sales tax. And we have a 'privilige tax' when you buy a car, etc. If a sales tax goes by another name (the CAT or a 'privilege tax'), I would still say Oregon has a defacto (dishonest) set of sales taxes. But our legislature felt the need to bamboozle people by calling those sales taxes something else.
