Garmin did not develop the TR1, they purchased it (although they did upgrade it).

I am very aware of this and not saying that they developed it in the first place!

And this will not be an alternative to the TR1, but a replacement.
Well, excuse me.
This is why I don't like posting here anymore!!!!!!!!

I would be interested to see how it works. I have had 4 TR1s on 4 different boats and they have been pretty good to me. I have gone through pumps, switches, and a ecu but they are easy to come by and with a little understanding of the system are easy to fix. If the new system functions the same with a cleaner install it will be a winner.

I to really like the TR-1. The one on my current boat is an older model with the Newport address on the sticker.
Agreed, with a little understanding these are not hard to understand.
Mine has been pretty reliable and any support needed has been a breeze. Thanks to Portland Marine and Electronics and Garmin customer support.......

Re: TR-1 Has a new alternative

Going to an electric linear actuator is a pretty bold move.
They are used extremely rarely in commercial marine applications because they just don't usually have the reliability that is needed in a salt water environment.

I was always pretty impressed that the old TR-1 used hydraulics since that is a proven technique in the marine world. If Garmin's mechanical engineers have designed a fast, accurate, reliable, linear actuator that can handle the brutal world of salt water, that will be an impressive feat. But you'd have a hard time convincing me to be a guinea pig for this experiment.

I presume it will take 3-4 years before we start getting useful feedback whether these linear actuators really do stand up. And if they start failing before that time, that will be a bad sign. I'll be waiting on the sidelines in the meantime.

And you know the warranty period will be less than that.

Intel I’ve received from Wa Sportsmen’s shows is that the TR1 is or will be discontinued shortly. Being an owner the elephant in the room is, how long will they produce parts for those of us invested owners. Rumor has it 3 years. We need to push back on them to increase that timeline. Perhaps by not running out and buying the new one or at least sharing our collective frustration. Either way they will be obsolete in a period of time. :twocents:

Given the number of these on the water, 3 years isn't that long and I too am not happy to hear this if it's the case. Anyone going to the sportsmen show should articulate this concern to garmin at their booth. :twocents: While garmin usually puts out good stuff, I don't see how that electric shaft is going to hold up in the salt. Hydraulics is pretty bulletproof.

I'm on my 2nd TR-1. Ran the first one on a boat for 8 years and only ever had to replace the wired remote in that time. Just installed the second one this summer on the current boat. While it's pretty expensive and can be high maintenance, it's worth it and I wouldn't be without one if you do any boating alone.

I've had the Tr1 and now have the Minn kota Ulterra auto deploy. Will never go back. In the wind with a 25 foot open boat there is no comparison. The only benefit that I would say that you get from a Tr1 is when you are anchored in reverse during a slack tide. I had the boat designed with this configuration of a front mounted Minn Kota and 3 batteries. To find a place for 3 batteries afterwards might be a pain. Thanks Doc for your suggestion on this matter. Just don't call him while he is in surgery, ha!

I’ll be curious on how the “replacement” is. I have had TR1 on my Seahawk for a few years and have not had 1 single issue. Love it.

I really hate to see the TR1 go away. I sent an email to Garmin to ask about support for the TR1, here's the response. :twocents:

Hello Bill,
We just announced last week a new Reactor 40 Kicker, which is replacing the Tr1 Gold. The Gold has been on its way out for years, but we have now finally made the replacement. We will continue to support it for a while, but for how long I couldn't say. It will not go away overnight, so there is no worries about that.
