The Tiffany is gone from Yaquina Bay

The old rusty steel boat that was anchored in Yaquina Bay off Idaho Point for so long has been hauled up to Washington I hear. At any rate, it's no longer here.

I'm glad it didn't sink in place and create a big mess. But, it has been there for so long I feel like something is missing! My daughter has made up stories about ghosts living aboard while she was stuck out on the bay with me for hours on end.

I won't miss her. The Division of State Lands has been working on getting that ol' tub out of here before she did roll over and cause a mess. We already have the Margaret Ann laying on her side in the channel by the #21 marker. We didn't need another tourist attraction (and/or navagation hazard) of this nature on the river.

I will admit though that she made a good reference point on the river when the fog is thick!

Do you have any information on this wreck? Is it completely submerged? The only reference I can find to a F/V Margaret Ann in Oregon is a grounding at 44.58N 125.08W on 1/25/01 (which, by the way, seems like awefully deep water to ground a boat on). I'm just curious how big of boat it was and how long ago it sank. Also, I'd be interested in any info you have on locations of any other vessels sunk in shallow water (under 100'). I feel an exploratory dive trip in my near future...:D

Last winter a small white fiberglass commercial boat was put at anchor just across the channel from the Tiffany. It sank in one of the storms. Then the salvage and EPA got involved to raise/dispose it.

I was hoping the same scenario wouldn't play out for the Tiffany. Glad to see a proactive solution no matter how it came about. When I noticed it missing I looked all around because I always figured it would not end well.

Then there was the Hero, it went away before sinking also. It was anchored just east of the turning basin.

The Tiffany would have made a nice little artificial reef! ;)

I've gone the wrong side of it too. Depends on where it was swinging!

That other boat was a bummer if its the same one I'm thinking of. Was it an old blue and white Reinell that was for sale in the Embarcadero for a long time? It almost sank there! The guy that owned it hadn't been on it in many years and had some disease that kept him from getting down to it. He put an ad on CL where I saw it and went down to look at it. The dang thing was full of water and rotten to the core. The engine was almost rotted away. So I left and emailed him that he'd be lucky to give it away.

Well, he did give it away to a woman who thought she could use it for something. I happened to meet her down in transient moorage with her husband who had just bought an old Bayliner Victoria that I have a bunch of parts for. They couldn't get the boat running but had towed it there just like they towed the old Reinel out by the Tiffany and anchored it. They sold the Victoria for $350 and apparently abondoned the Reinel. I told her at the time that she should give it away to someone that could pull it out of the water. I explained that she could be liable if it sank. What a shame . . .

Peligic Captain,

Sorry to hear that she made it up there and stopped. I would think that it was headed to the scrap yard, but...:passout:

I did call the Port of Newport. She apparently even made it out of here on her own power and was not towed.

Thanks for the info. I assume you were at South Beach Scuba; I'm really glad there is a shop on the central coast again. I was down there for a weekend last year and had some gear issues; South Beach Marina didn't have what I needed, and the closest option was Salem Scuba. Anyway, now I have something new to explore.
