I am thinking out taking my 16yr old to Shining Lake in about three weeks. I have done a search and found it's about a 3.5 mile hike. Im guessing this will take a little over an hour or so.

I will be packing in a raft and plan to fish nightcrawlers, wooley buggers and spinners.

Anyone have any advice or ideas of other nearby opportunities while we are there. We plan on staying two nights.

Only fished it once. Years ago. Was a pretty pathetic little pond. Shallow, moss filled, and full of salamanders and not much else. It was a little later in the summer, I think early july? I personnally wouldnt bother with that much effort. However, i do have very limited experience with this lake, so take it for what its worth. :) I would drive a little further and go south and hike into some lakes either on jefferson, (tons and tons of brookie lakes) or the sisters wilderness.

I think Codeman has his Shining lakes mixed up. Hardly a pond at 12 acres, and 24 feet deep and very scenic. A nice hike on a closed FS road. The lake used to have a lot of fat trout and I have done well there in the fall. It's stocked with Bows and Cutthrout and they do well there. A raft will be a big help as the fish hang in the deeper water when it's warm.Good luck.

Oops I think youre right. Threw me off talking about hiking in. Last time I was up there I think you could drive to shinning lake. Im thinking the lake I was talking about is serene lake. We drove into a lake several years ago, believe it was shinning, and then hiked into serene and rock lake. they pretty much all sucked. Seemed fairly shallow and warm. didnt see a single fish rise all day nor did we get a bite in either of the lakes.

I just seen this post I fished Shinning Lake alot in the early 90,s also killed a couple Big Black-tail Deer near there, Shinning Lake can be very, very good early in year we drove Indian Ridge road back to campground then Mt Bike in the rest., just over the knob from shinning there are 2 other lakes not noticed much that are great early also, one is a experimental lake for Golden trout . you can Google it on Google earth it is quite a hike bit worth every ounce of sweat.
They are right under Indian Ridge lookout.
