This from today's Columbian regarding salmon predation by sea lions:

"NOAA Fisheries Advice to Anglers:
The federal Marine Mammals Protection Act allows sport fishermen to deter a seal or sea lion from damaging their catch or gear, so long as the measures do not result in death or serious injury to the animal.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries section is developing guidelines. Until those are complete, the agency is offering the following interim advice:

Acceptable deterrance measures are noise-making devices and firecrackers. Only small-scale firecrackers with explosive power equal to or less than Class C explosives are allowed. Firecrackers cannot be placed in contact with a seal or sea lion's body."

Text goes on to give unlawful means of detering (firearms, etc) and unlawful circumstances for harassment (while not fishing) I just thought I'd post this because of the running thread about it last week.

was there any info on the seal bombs or equivilent(sp?) being available to the public???

Some time ago fish and game would give M-80's encased in a 2 3/4" 12 gauge shotgun shell to farmers up north(blueberries, corn, grains) in the skagit valley to protect crops from geese etc and they had a range of 20 to thirty yards( launch one above a mess of geese etc and boom, the flock would disperse).

All you'd see was a sparkling trailer with very little noise from the shotgun, kinda like a (Phunt sound) until the M-80 went off...kaboom
I would love to be able to purchase such a product this time of yr!

I think m-80 would be the way to go but you would need for them to blow below the surface to have any effect. A couple years ago while fishing for sturgeon from a beach below raineer, I heard gun shots and saw this guy about 50 yards down the beach takin pot shots with a 22 in the direction of the sea lion. He obviosly wasnt trying to hit it,just scare it off but it had no effect whatsoever. So I dont think firecrackers would do much if anything. Only way to scare em off is to have major blast underwater which basically means you scared the seal away and all the fish also.

No a paintball gun wouldn't be considered a firearm but in the above article it would fall under harrasment guidelines and get some healthy fines.

I still think the M-80 shotgun load would be effective as you could get the sound near the sealion opposed to the muzzle sound/blast no where near with no effect from a standard firearm, not to mention ricochete effect off the water from a slug, or bullet.
May even be possible that the shell would be easily discharged from a standard marine safety flare gun.

I'm going to make some inquiries into this issue and see what turns up.

Paint ball gun would at least mark'em so we would know who's the bad guys. last year I had a sealion come right up on my swim platform and try an get in my boat, I beat the heck out of him on the nose and he went back in the water and left us alone left didn't see him or another rest of the day, so maybe putting a little hurt'em gets the word out. lots lots of fish after that also. Good Luck try rubber bullets, put the hurt on'em.

I have seal bombs but haven't used them as the fish would spook too. I'll be curious what shows up in this thread. A WDFW rep says the seal population has stabilized. That was his answer to my observation there seem to be more every year. Less is sometimes better?

I was having lots of problems with Sea Lions last year taking fish and had on come up on my gunnel with the Salmon in the net! After that incident I called region 5 WDFW and they gave me a phone number to Brian Gorman (206.526.6613) NMF in Seattle, He told me if you feel that your life is in danger that you could use lethal means as necessary to protect yourself or clients. One catch you have 24 hrs. To report the incident if you kill a Sea Lion! It's almost like self incrimination, but according to him is legal as long as you feel your life is in jeopardy.
