Rigging a deer hanging spot in my garage?

I have a 11' ceiling in my garage and want to rig a gambrel system. Can I just screw a course threaded eye bolt into the ceiling (which would be the floor joist to our bonus room)? Or would I be better off anchoring a couple 4x4 posts to both side walls and getting a heavy beam to sit on top?

Catch several ceiling joist with a nice piece of lumber maybe 2x6 .Find exact center of joists using a stud finder or the nail trick,(tap nail where you can feel it slide on opposite sides of joists .Mark C/L of joist in several locations ,get a nice straight line across ceiling so your 2x6?+- with be at a right angle to joists (parallel).Predrill with a small drill bit 3/16" at c?L og joists ,this will help with cracking then u can use some 1/4" lags+- with washers. If u use a 2x6" u can install two lags on eaxh joist,i would cath at least 3 joists or more, never know u could get a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge Buck. Before u install plate on ceiling i would have a couple threaded eyebolts with nuts installed ,better choice than a lagged eyebolt.Find location for one of those hand winches that are on Boat trailers etc ,then u have no problem pulling and holding the weight and tying off load or find a snatchblock pulley system that are sold a outdoor stores for this very reason ,the rope/cord is a little small.Hope this help and makes sence dont need the whole works coming down on you with knife in hand etc,

I assume you have 5/8" drywall then wood I beam joists of some type. If you buy a couple sticks of Angle steel with holes. Like used for Garage door opener hanging. Buy 2 of the heavier gauge type long enough to catch 3 Joists. Then lag bolt them to 3 joists about 2' apart. then with short chain and two chain Clevis attach to both to spread the load. Then hang a rope pulley lift unit to center of chain. You will be able to hang a complete Elk if you do it correctly.

Option #2 Best, get a piece of 3x3 angle to span the joists you will be able to have several holes drilled in angle for some 3/8"+- S hooks,a chunk of unistrut on the ceiling would work also.Remember to grind any sharp corners on the steel ,so no one can get injured on the corners etc.,dont go too deep with lags never know what is in ceiling above, but enough to carry the load ,electrical, plumbing, ductwork etc.Good luck with the project.

Another trick is to use a piece of sliding door track, bolted into the rafters as suggested above and then build hooks (use different lengths to account for what you are hanging, hocks or ribs) out of rebar by welding washers on the one end to side into the track from the end and using a torch to heat the other end to form a hook. Works really slick for hanging quarters of an elk or halves of deer. You could remove the hooks when not in use. I did this a couple of years ago and I wished I had done it a long time ago, forget the darn ropes and ladders routine.

Since we are talking about hanging deer ,i needed a setup ,so i talked with a hunting sales associate,he seemed really smart and he sold me all this, hanging cord seemed a little overkill,he said i should get two packages of cord? i thought for two deer he said i could use the extra if a vehicle got stuck or to pull a log out of the road, hope i did'nt get taken advantage of with buying such heavy deer hanging stuff.???????????

Got in the rafters above my garage ceiling and placed a 1" steel bar across 3 rafters (right in the crotch of the rafter where all the webs come together). I then drilled a hole in the ceiling directly below the steel rod. Attached a short piece of chain around the steel pipe, through the hole in the ceiling. Bought a 1 ton chain hoist at Harbor Freight and hung it from the chain. I drape the hoist chains over the ends of the garage door rails when not in use. I've hung deer and whole elk carcasses with no problems.

When I did mine I separated the angle iron so that I could do two deer at a time or a single elk. Besides the eye bolt I also added a shackle and a pulley and mounted cleats on the wall to tie off on. For Elk a ganged pulley is much easier.

On Oct 31one year we got home with two bucks and had the best haunted butcher house on the block
