Removing Canned Tuna Lids

I have been having a heck of time removing the lids from my canned tuna. I typically use the flat edge of a dinner knife and hold the can against my stomach and pry it off, but sometimes I get the tuna juice over my shirt. There has to be a better way, what do you all do?

Being someone who usually eats 2 or more cans per day, I have discovered a very "handy" trick. Pun intended.
1. Find the place on the jar where the threads end and there is a gap next to the lid.

2. Note how nicely most forks have a curvature that will cradle the curve of the jar!

3. Place your fork against the jar where the fork best fills the gap next to the lid. This will be likely where the fork is narrowest near the useful end.

4. Use your index finger to apply pressure to the fork against the jar and at the same time, pull up on the wide end of the fork with your other hand. (I placed my thumb here just to illustrate)...Pop!

Its nice not to need any tools to get into your jar. Ive found that many plastic forks can be successful as well if you're careful.

Can you tell I'm on my paternity leave (3 month old at home), and have plenty of time on my hands?? :)

What, nobody likes my fork method? I keep seeing an image of that weird looking tool.

Stickfish, yes, go to your local scrapyard and find a sheet of steel. You will need a plasma cutter, buy one for around $2000 or rent one. You'll need a good sturdy vise and punch too. Probably only a couple hours labor and you can cut and bend your own!

Send a PM to Reel Song, he's good with metal too and can help you with the design.

Hahaha...good stuff. Were up to 21 posts now on opening a can of tuna! Gotta love it!

That is way too expensive, I mean I want to find one whittled from whale bone at a garage sale and still get change for my nickel. Going to the dollar store is just too expensive, how do I do this on the cheap?

I'm pretty scientific about this so take notes; I take my finger nail under the lid and PRY up and the lid comes off....no tools, no broken jars no blood, no problemo...eat and grin...:excited:

Chilly one "Happiness is a Bent Rod!" :thisbig:
One or more finger nails works perfect. No chance of chipping a jar and less chance of bending the lid.

Pry with a spoon where thread closest to the flat. If you find your rings are sticking, make sure to add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your pressure cooker when canning...keeps them pretty clean.

No way is a glam can opener going catch anything, heck it is too short. Heck if your fishing a 20' foot boat you'd need a 12' can opener to take care of that tuna eye
