Does anyone have any experience or knowledge concerning Nissan outboards? I'm looking to downsize from a 70hp Johnson to about a 30 hp LS and was wondering if these are good motors. Thanks

I have the 8hp tohatsu. Its a great engine and was a super value. I got mine within 2 months of pop getting his 9.9 merc pro kicker... inside cover of his manual said block made by Tohatsu. I honestly didn't know much about them but the ausies and europeans love them. Did my research and They have been around a long time and have made engines for major makers. They just have just decided to push their own brand. Between my 2 boats and pops boat we have Mercs Yamaha Johnson, Tohatsu holds its own. I put over 250 hours on that kicker this last year and she has functioned flawlessly. Also the paint/graphics are much better than the Nissan.

I just sent you a PM. Like others have said - Nissan Marine is the same as Tohatsu - they have been private labeling all of Mercury's four stoke motors 30hp and below for years. I believe this is true for Johnson/Evinrude four strokes as well.

Also know that if you buy new they recently improved their warranty from 3 years to 5 years.

You can check out pricing at an online retailer at onlineoutboards.com but I highly recommend finding one used on CL

I found a brand new 2011 25hp Long Shaft with electric start and power trim, fuel injected, etc. and paid only $2,000 from a guy on CL. They are manufactured/assembled just outside Nashville TN and the guy bought if from the online dealer above just down the street from the plant 2/12 years ago and never used it.

He did however start it as I had problems getting it running due to bad gas in the lines. Once I confirmed it would fire by putting starting fluid in the cylinders I tracked down the restriction to the "vapor Seperator" which has a float and needle valve in there. (I highly recommend buying the Service Manual online - had I not had this I would have been paying someone else hours of labor to get it running). I was able to remove two bolts, pull it away from the side of the motor, pull the cap and spray cleaner all over and in the needle valve, the bowl, etc. and drain through the drain screw. Also pulled the fuel rail and soaked the injectors, etc. - put it all back together and she fired right up. Am now running it through the 10 hour break in period.

Will report back later - solid motor - quiet - very little vibration.

Love it.
