So I went out of Netarts by myself for the first time. I learned really quickly why you don't cross to the South. It looked smooth.......It wasn't. The ocean was not that smooth either but I was able to pick up a limit of bass in a fast manner and make the dreaded trip back in. I can tell you I was genuinely scared and as you will see I had to talk myself through it although I did edit out the cursing. Left the ramp at 0635 and was back in at 0742. Next time I need to pay attention to the "combined" seas, not just the swell.

Enjoy

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

I enjoyed that, but where some pics of the fish?
Hahahaha getting video of the fishing was not on my mind......at all. I did have some video from our trip out of Nehalem on 5-4-15 but for what ever reason the Hero3+ that I have on the video on doesn't always like to upload to my Mac. Good news is I have my underwater rig back up and running and will get some more of that our next trip.

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

It's difficult to really get an idea of what it's like to cross a bar like this from the camera perspective. The fish eye view of the gopro makes everything seem smaller, but the surf feels a whole heck of a lot bigger when you are pretty much sitting right at sea level, and looking a breaker straight in the face. It can be intense. Not for those inclined to panic.

I'm not too proud to admit that on my first crossing where I misjudged the channel and went south over the breakers, I was scared to come back in, and was shaking for a half hour after getting out.

Now, I look back and laugh about it though ;).

I'm sure we'll cross that bar many more times in the future.

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

We had a pretty lively and contentious discussion about crossing the Netarts bar a couple of years back. Check it out and notice the wide variety of opinions and the consensus that it is a very dangerous bar.

That said some do cross it and some have crossed it many times. Regarding this thread specifically please don't learn the wrong lesson about the south crossing. The fact is the "channel" changes almost weekly and sometimes disappears altogether. Don't think the north route will always be better.

Make sure you drive up the road from Netarts to Oceanside and park at the turnouts above Happy Camp. Get out and watch the bar for 15 minutes before you cross. That will tell you where the "channel", such as it is, is located on that particular day.

Ebb tide turns that bar into a beast. I would only cross on slack or incoming tide.

I believe the death toll on the Netarts bar is 4 lost in the last 10 years? Most of those were bay crabbers who lost power and were swept out into breakers on an ebb tide. That's a high body count for a bar that almost never gets crossed.

If it were me on a PWC I would wear a full wet or dry suit, and at least one swim fin on my foot for the crossing. That way if it all goes bad and you end up in the water, you are at least warm and mobile. When I cross in the dory I prep by mounting the oars in ready position, clearing the deck of any obstructions that could impede rowing, and picking my line from the aforementioned road overlook. I wear a full wetsuit anyway and I've been known to wear a swim fin as well.

So you were scared eh? That's a good thing. The minute you're not scared of that bar she will kill you dead. I'm not one to say never do it, for that would be hypocritical. I am saying it's dangerous, it's killed people, and you need be cunning and wise in picking your day, picking your route, and having contingency plans in case it all goes gunny bags out there.

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

I appreciate everyone's concern, I really do. PWC's are used for rescue crafts and handle some crazy crazy water. We are in dry suits and at all times have our life jackets on and have emergency handheld radio's. We do not horse around on them and always take every bar crossing seriously.

That being said, if the videos I post start up big debates on safety or turn ugly I will simply stop sharing them. I have crossed a number of bars in boats both prop and jets several hundred times easily as the captain of the boat. The PWC aspect is what's new to me.

No, don't stop posting. You PWC guys are advancing the state of the art and the ensuing discussion is healthy and productive.

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

If I were you and space was limited, I would look at killbags vs. coolers.
Always amazed at how many fit in a bag vs. the rigid cooler and you would need less ice. Just my .02

I hear your point. However, the only way I can see to secure kill bags would be to get two and rig a saddle bag system. The plus side is a couple more tuna and less ice. The big down side I see, and why I have not gone that way, is that it would take up leg room for me and I have all my rod holders and gear attached to the cooler. The leg room being the biggest issue as I turn sideways when fighting a fish. I have seen some guys run kill bags in Hawaii and they also pull a sled(?) behind them.

Here is one of the setups that is popular in Hawaii

In this one you can see the kill bag on the port side

Great video! :applause: I always enjoy watching Omahundro's jet ski videos too. Looks like fun. Obviously you both have put a lot of thought into your setup and have become very successful fishing from your ski. I live in Netarts and would love to see you cross the bar sometime. PM when you're going again so I can watch please? I also fish 3 Arches so if you see the Cyndi Lu out there, come by and say hi.

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

67starcraft,

I will let you know when we or I take our next trip out. I work friday-Sunday so I only fish the week days.

Soulakala,

I will try to put together a video of my setup and maybe even a step by step on setting up the 152qt. When picking a bar exit strategy we just take a quick look and attempt to pick the smoothest route possible. I can definitely take a screen shot of the route in and out of the bars.

Re: Netarts 5-11-15 video

Great footage! I wondered if you got sea sick, riding that little ski on rough days  7 crab is a big success, especially since you only have one pot!
7 crab seems to be about the average that I get out of one pot. I had a second pot, but the Nehalem Bar (and my use of screws instead of bolts) decided to take it.

This was the first time I have ever gotten seasick to the point where I just couldn't stay out any longer. It was bittersweet going in, as the bass were actually really aggressive that day, and fighting hard. I was really blown away. Every time I hooked up, it felt like a ling at first. I would have fished all day, normally...
