I have a 21' Thunderjet luxor o/s and need some ideas for a net holder. Seems no matter where I put it, its always in the way. I was thinking about a rod station but not totally sure. Any ideas? T

:twocents: A Folbe "Advantage" rod holder mounted normally in the accompanying base on the inside of the gunwale but oriented vertically. Two feet below that is a 2 inch "U" bolt attached to the storage tray. You don't have to lift the net handle out of a tube but merely pull it toward you and the net is free. Works Slick!

I use on of my side gunnel rod holders that are just behind the top. Flip them up vertically and put the net in. It doesn't have to be a folbes, I use Scotty's.

I have also seen guys lay them up on the top and clamp them in place with a spring clamp. That was a pretty slick idea I can't believe I hadn't thought of until I saw it.

I've done many single and double gunwale mount tubes just for nets and gaffs also.

When I had a soft top, I simply used industrial sticky backed Velcro on the net handle in two spots and then sewed a couple corresponding Velcro patches on the roof. Worked great and out of the way with the top up. Kept the wind and waves from knocking it off. Only downsides was forgetting its up there and taking off and kids couldn't reach the net up hi when they wanted to do net jobs for others.

Many options like gunwale tray angled mount tubes behind bench seats inside but I don't have pics on my phone of those. A chunk of PVC pipe strategically placed can do the job on the cheap for many on their own also.

I have a net with a extending handle and I keep it stowed behind the side seat on my Thunderjet. Just takes a minute for whoever doesn't have the fish on to get it out and extend the handle and be ready. I rarely fish by myself so it works for me...kinda drives some of my fishing partner a little nuts though...:meme:

On my Seahawk, I bought a plastic circular fitting at HD, about 2 bucks, about 4 inches long and bolted it outside of the top to the rear bow on my windshield. I just shove the net handle in the circular fitting outside of the top with the top up. Works great, well out of the way, cheap and easy to reach.

Only one flaw, when you run you need to attach a stretch cord to the net hoop and attach it inside the boat, to the windshield bow or whatever is handy.

(I didn't once, one my nets flew away, it didn't float and now I have a new net. Nothing is perfect)

A little foam in the hollow net handles makes them float.

Girls hair bands (not the 80's rock group hair bands!) are great to keep the net hoop tucked against the net handle for storage and not to grab things like cleats when netting fish, and the net slips right out of the hair band as soon as you slide it under the fish, works great! Also keeps the net from blowing around and catching hooks, rods, etc while it's stowed.

If you have a convertible top, with the net handle extended & locked in place, shove the net bow over the forward convertible top bow far enough to hold it up against the underside of the rear top bow. Poke it in so the handle is pointed to one of the rear corners. In use, just reach up , grab the handle & pull rearward.

Only drawback is after it has been replaced after netting a fish, you may get a few drops of water until it dries.

To hold the bag against the handle when netting or storing, Scotty makes a Net Minder that uses a figure 8 rubber band type thing with uses a small Kokanee down-rigger clip attached to, which you clip onto the bottom of the net bag, which sells for less than $10. Great for solo netting also.

With a bit of nylon, canvas, mesh, or similar cloth, you could make a big sleeve for your net and stick it in head-first, and then dependnig on your boat you could have come paracords or carabiners etc, and clip it somewhere convenient and outside of traffic areas. It wouldn't get hung up on anything because the net's mesh can just be stuffed inside.

Not much tougher to slap together than a flyrod sleeve.

Always had a problem with getting the net out, plus always being in the way. Got my good friend who owns an upholstery shop to put a mesh compartment on top of my boat (North River Seahawk). As seen in the photos, it is attached to the top of my boat with snaps.

All I can say is that it never gets hung up is always located within easy reach, and never gets hung up on anything when we pull it out.

We have a Raider with a windshield and take down canvas top. For when we want the top up i.e. keep out the rain, have some shade, etc. we came up with 2 gunnel mount rod holders facing backwards (so the net, rod, or whatever) angles towards the front of the boat one on each side just forward of the back of the top. You will need to cut a 2" to 3" hole in the top of your gunnel to accommodate it. When the top is down, too much wind, trolling in tight quarters, etc. we mounted a 10" piece of 2" aluminum pipe with a small bolt across the bottom (for a stop) to the inside of the gunnel vertically just behind the windshield on the passenger side. Its out of the way but easily accessible. Hope this helps, HS

I used a piece of 4 inch ABS plastic pipe and wired it and velcro strapped it onto the rocket launcher at the rear of the canvas. I just found the rocket launchers were too tight when I wanted to pull out the net while fishing single handed. The big wide pipe makes it easier.

I also have a 20' Thunderjet. I found the best place for a vertical, floor mounted net holder is aft of the driver's side bench seat, in the corner against the side of the hull. If you have a long handled net like I do you also will need a net holder mounted above the first to the side of the gunnel or the tray that runs under the gunnel. The two together with minimize the torque created with big waves or running, regardless of net height. I had the two welded together for more stability.

Why there? Best location to not block your view when trolling from the port aft position where your trolling motor is.

Some tips: There aren't any net holders sold as such. Look for single rod holders.
Reinforce with strips of steel if you do the second mount to the tray/gunnel. That's aluminum you are mounting to. I made a couple of wraps on the net handle with tape to ensure a snug fit to minimize torque too. Last, get those large colored twist ties to wrap your net to keep it from swinging, but remove easily.

FYI LOTS of trial and ERROR. I started with the floor mount and modified to get where it is today. It works.

I do like those PVC holders mounted to the sides of the folding tops mentioned above but I have an 6' net handle for my Beckman net so those would not work well for me, as well as easier access. The extra length helps me reach out and net em!

Got your PMs requesting photos.
