My First experience with Mud Hole

I just wanted to convey what I would consider a fairly poor first experience with Mud Hole.

I'll start by saying that I have built about 20 rods so I classify myself as a highly skilled hobbyist...not a professional but I can crank off a dam nice rod!

I usually order through a local supplier but Mud Hole had some stuff I wanted to try (a prefab split grip and abalone inlay sheets mainly).

The first hick up was that when the bill came through the shipping was way more than what was stated on the invoice...with a call that was cleared up...something about Candian vs international shipping rates blah blah blah.

the second: I ordered the split grip kit with an upgrade to a metalic hood on the reel seat. That piece is listed as fitting 16 or 17 sized real seat...I got a 16 seat with a 17 hood. They owned up and said they should have caught that and would exchange it if I shipped it back. My local guy gave me a hood for free that fits so manning up was enough for me there.

I continued with my build and I notice that the OD for the little gold trim rings (in between the split grip) is slightly bigger than the OD on the reel seat tubing. The reel seems to fit in place so I proceed with the build but once complete and the reel is mounted, the pressure was enough to loosen the ring from the epoxy...guess I'll glue it down again and hope it sticks?

These last two things can be chalked up to newbie issues so im not going to punish a company and for something like that BUT there was one more thing.

The final straw in my experience was a piece that was back ordered. I didnt notice it listed as back ordered (a tip top), I thought i lost it, so I replaced it locally. Well I get an email indicating it was back order and they had recieved it and shipped it. Thats OK right, their website says they pay the cost of shipping back ordered pieces right? NOPE - not to Candain clients. So for a back ordered tip top that costs $1.25 they charged me $5-6 shipping. They did so without consulting me and even though I called as soon as the email came in, the part was already out the door...a part I didnt even need!!!

They wouldn't do a dam thing about it either. Im a reasonable guy, I said heck, give me a $6 credit against my next order but they weren't interested in that either.

I have 12 sage blanks in my hobby room...guess who wont be getting another order for me.

If you chose to use Mud Hole, make sure you are 100% certain on everything you order and don't expect proactive communication to sort out issues before the happen.

I've never had a problem with Mudhole. To avoid the Fed Ex problem, I have a buddy who lives right near them, in FL. I tell him what I want, PayPal him the money, he buys the items and, finally, he packages them up and sends them to me via USPS, which is usually much cheaper than FedEx or UPS.

Yes on all counts.

Batson has an incredible inventory although not so well known to those that are not full time builders. They are changing the marketing structure a bit to help out the average joe builder and all you need to do is to give them a phone call. Utmost has access to both Batson and PacBay, so anything those two offer you can buy through Utmost. Batson and Utmost have fast shipping and fair shipping charges. Utmost is in the Batson family, Mic Batson and Jim Batson keep it running and have an incredible knowledge of rod building. Mic's Daughter keeps the mail order part of the business going.

I am spoiled a bit, living just 10 miles from Batson and Utmost, plus Pac Bay is here also. Bad part is everytime I stop by Utmost my wallet gets thinner as I cannot resist going through the rod racks and picking out a few more blanks!

I'll have to check out AWS...as long as they have the same stuff roughly and are decently priced, I'll be checking them out next...I have a 4120 that needed to get built for a mid july Chinook fishery!!!

My experience is that none of the rod building companies are very good. I had shipping issues with Mudhole in the past. Basically I wanted all orders shipped via USPS mail. I got the ok from Mudhole that all future orders from my account would be shipped USPS mail. The next two orders were shipped out Fedex and delivery takes a week! I missed two deadlines on rods for customers because of this and each time they said sorry we will make a note. They also had a lot of issues with items being out of stock.

Anglers Workshop has great prices compared to Mudhole but EVERY order (20+) I have ever placed from them has had items on back order! I don't know how any company selling components cannot have at least 5 rods worth of each component in stock. Heck, sometimes I am only ordering components for two rods and they won't have everything for small orders even.

I did use Mudhole for an order recently because they had something I needed and everything in that order was in stock. They also seem to have a better stock system now but prices are quit a bit higher than Anglers. It seems like if anyone wanted to get into the rod component business you could take it over fairly easy! :D We are stuck with these though so you kind of have to deal with it.
