I finally got back onto the ocean this past week, filling the freezer.

Steve great job and nice work.

I love longleader...its fun and I love bringing new folks on board and getting them into a LOT of fish. Agree Steve...the cleaning is not so fun...

Its soooooo much better now that we can keep hali and then do long leader - it makes the long run out there worth it.

I know I'm sounding greedy...I wish I could keep Lings as bycatch while targeting Hali and then move to longleader after we get our halibut. But having Ling on board...we all know we get stuck down to standard bottom fish limit then. I guess I can just wish....

ODFW FAQ

What about Pacific halibut, other flatfish, sablefish and Pacific cod on the same trip?

  • Yes. Offshore longleader gear fishing may be combined with an all-depth Pacific halibut trip.
  • Once the general marine species bag limit is exceeded with only longleader rockfish (the rockfish species listed above), all anglers on the vessel must stop fishing for halibut and switch all halibut fishing gear to longleader gear.
  • Anglers may have onboard other flatfish, sablefish and Pacific cod prior to switching gear to target longleader rockfish.
  • When the regular bottomfish fishery is open at all depths, anglers will have the option to combine all-depth halibut with regular bottomfish or all-depth halibut with longleader fishing. Not both.
    • Longleader fishing and regular bottomfish fishing cannot be combined on the same trip

On smaller fish you can saw right through the bones then trim out the belly section. In the large rockfish I use it in the same fashion as a knife following the bones. But for me at least I can get much closer to the bone much quicker and I can skin the fillets like a pro in 2 seconds. I dot a better job at 1/4 the time with an electric.

A guy who fillets a couple thousand fish a year like those charter guys probably aren’t seeing as much benefit.

Cord or no cord? Sorry Steve I'm not trying to take the thread but I am really interested. Last question.
I have always used 12v corded ones. I hate dead batteries. I have a Scotty plug wired into mine for the boat and can hook it to a lithium battery if I ever needed to take it to a fillet table. There’s a lot more options for battery powered units.

I never sharpened mine. Not sure if you can or need to.

This inspires me! I am new to using long leaders and I need help fishing in the Pacific Northwest for the first time.
I am originally from Texas, and I used to love fishing the lakes, rivers, and streams down there. I mostly fished for crappie, Guadalupe bass, smallmouth bass, and the occasional drum. Since moving several years ago, I have no idea how to fish up here. What kind of rig do I need? What manner of lure? What should I hope to catch other than the rockfish? Where are the good spots?
