Finally had a chance to get the boat out and fished Merwin this week. I thought I'd use in line weights instead of the downriggers. I have always used 10 feet of depth for each oz of weight as a guide for trolling. Marked fish from 20 to 50 feet. Tried 2 oz, 3 oz and 4 oz banana weights. Pretty slow, we did get 3 Kokanee and one nice Rainbow. Seemed to die around noon, fished till 2.

Wondering if 4 oz of lead and 50 ft on the line counter is putting me at 40 feet (traveling about 1.2 mph)?

Appreciate a refresher on the dynamics of using the inline weights to hit a certain depth.

Thanks!

I’m no expert, but what I’ve been told is 10’ of depth per ounce with 100’ of line out at about that speed. I’ve only caught kokes on the downriggers, my long lines have yet to produce. So I just stick to the riggers.

I could be completely wrong since I have not connected with that math, it’s just what I was told by people that are much better Kokanee fisherman than I am.

Another way to get close to your desired depth of fishing is keeping your line at a 45degree angle. The diagonal on a 12ā€ square is almost 18ā€, and is 45 degrees. So for every foot of depth you need 18ā€of line out. Just add 1/3 of length to your desired depth. Example 20’ depth = 30’ of line out. The amount of weight you use and your trolling speed get you that 45 degree angle.
