here is a video on how to clean sunfish for those of you that would like to try it. I never will and will not allow them to be hooked and brought on my boat,(same with wolf eels and octopus) but each to there own.

One of the best examples of ā€˜you are what you eat’. I found a small, maybe 2’ diameter, mola years ago that had been hit by a prop. I gaffed it and cut it up out of curiosity. They eat jelly’s, and indeed appear to be made of jelly. Hard to imagine them cooking up well at all.

I find watching that quite repulsive. Very interesting, but gives me that "lump" in my throat.
To each their own though. .

Two things stood out and seemed impressive to me:
1. Those knives had impressive blade sharpness, even for my high standards.
2. The guy behind the knife has a detailed understanding of the fish's anatomy and the skill to work within it.
I don't care to ever harvest one, but it would appear little if any of the fish in video will be wasted based on the care taken in breaking it down.

I remember catching on about 35 pounds off the pier at Pismo Beach when I was a kid in the 60’s. They fight like a freight train. Took it home thinking it would be good to eat. What a mistake that was. It was like trying to clean a 35 pound chicken Geisel. And the smell was disgusting. Smelled like it had died a week earlier and gotten left in the hot sun.

It’s food. I don’t get the mentality of its cool to kill/eat this but not that, because of how it looks/acts. If people can find balut tasty, I’m sure plenty of folks find ways to make this taste delicious to them too. Opahs are cool looking, swords are cool, big elk look amazing, and we rave about harvesting/eating those… To each their own.
We’ve never knowingly hooked one and the little nursery groups of pie plates floating by are neat to see.

I was on an ODFW survey trip (hook&line survey) when someone brought up a sea cucumber. Discussion got started that they are good to eat if prepared properly. Out of curiosity, when back home I googled 'how to prepare sea cucumber'. After watching that video, I think I would rather eat a sunfish. If you think about what fileting a banana slug might be like, your on the right path.

Had some before at a big Chinese banquet. One of my Aunts at our table really loved it, so she pretty much got the whole plate to herself. It was like overcooked clam kinda chewy, but with the flavor of concentrated fish slime (or so I imagined, since of course we try to get all the slime off before we eat it). Bleccchh...
