It is also the reason I joined ifish in the first place. At the time, I hoped this discussion already existed so I could glean from it what I needed. Turns out, it's a very complex topic and I have far more still to learn than ever I imagined. (Still don't understand thixotropy)
Think gel, gelled, jello. A wet substance that is spreadable, yet resists flowing. It is possible that the cornstarch used in cooking and you used in your Oobleck experiments would work, but would detract from the strength of the epoxy rather than enhance it like fumed silica.

So true, and fewer of us will ever live, eat, and breath their way thru a major restoration as we have,.. to the point of waking up after a hard day and night session still covered in fiberglass and resin dust, washing your face, and getting back on task......JE
It is 'sew' refreshing to be understood for what I am!

PS: I've been granted the opportunity to 'play' with some left-over rolls of carbon graphite sewn cloth (single-axial, various patterns). It is definitely enough to cover the bottom of the Frayed Knot. There it is. What should I do with it?

As of now, brother Dan and I, get it! Thixotropy...

I spoke it this way, today... A very little bit of flour makes a large amount of grease/oil into delicious, thick gravy. But, there is a limit to the amount of filler until it's just ... Bondo.

Save it for another project. It would only add significant strength where it is not needed, and would add significant weight, expense and labor, by the time it was wetted out, sealed, sanded, and coated with couple of gloss coats of epoxy/graphite.

Unidirectional carbon fiber has many uses, and makes stronger laminates than woven CF when two opposing layers are used, and can provide more strength than cloth when used where strength is only needed in one direction. The same is true of course with unidirectional fiber glass.

CF, in general, is very nice to work with.

Good analogy.

I recently made a bondo like paste out of epoxy, fumed silica and milled fiber for another project, the leftover portion is incredibly strong and resilient. It sticks permanently to anything it dries on, and even when beaten with a hammer, refuses to crumble.. Many uses for something like that.
If a similar paste was made of, say, wood flour, you would have particle board.

Fumed silica is the same product as Cabosil or Colloidal silica, except it comes in a bag and costs 10%.

Excellent. What color is your Harvey, and what is her name? You're right, a dory will bring you back safely in really crummy conditions......maybe not fast, but safe.
Sorry for the late reply. Boat's name is "Hunky Dory", it is in international orange presently. Settled on red as doesn't seem I can get the orange in a single part paint (under lying paint is single part). Here is a picture. Work has started on the repaint job.

Word has it there are two new Harvey projects underway. I spoke with a gentleman who has read the fan club end to end and has started his restoration last week near Oregon City... Meeting another fan non member yet on Monday. I looked at a 1971 with a crown cabin top grafted on it last Tuesday. The boat is a project. I can toss the lead to anyone looking for a project.

I'm hoping to pick up my first dory a 20' Harvey in May when the owners get back from Arizona. Reading this thread tought me a lot about what I need to look for. Thanks for taking the time to go into detail so much in all your posts!

Any advice for a first time buyer and operator is welcome!

I learned a lot during our brief conversations at my house Joe Evens while you looked over my boat motor. Your advice probably saved me a few thousand on buying a new motor by talking me into putting time and money into the one I had.

Keep us posted on your potential Harvey purchase "Fincollector". Ask lots of questions and do a good inspection. Post pictures when you get a chance. Always good to see another Harvey serve it's purpose.

I will be glad to survey that Harvey with you. It's time we got together and had that beer.

That is why I posted the build. Nice to know it's served the purpose so soon. As noted previously, I was looking for this when I joined ifish. Hopefully, the next rebuilt Harvey will be even better. Keep posting pics!

We got the 1972 flat bottom Harvey running! new fuel pump, rebuilt the heat exchanger, rewired bilge and float switch, new perko, new shift and throttle cables, new hoses, converted the intake from twin carb to single with choke, new exhaust manifold zincs, new outdrive zincs, the list goes on! Cant get her on the water this week for a test but we are hoping to do that next week. Still looking for a tilt trailer. Will be selling the trailer it's sitting on now. It is a galvanized dual axle bunk, 22ft with brand new tires.

All these Harvey's coming back to life...very exciting. I hope to see some of these boats in the dory tuna posse this summer. There's nothing better than a bunch of dories gathering at the buoy in the gray light of dawn, and then heading off in a pack for tuna.
And I am hoping they all become active members of the Pacific City Dorymen's Association. A very good way to help keep our Dory Culture and Heritage strong!
Skip.

Well I got a call yesterday and it sounds like I get to go pick up my Harvey as soon as I can get to Newport Washington to get it.
ROAD TRIP!
Newport Washington? That IS a road trip. The only reason I even know where it is, is that I landed my hang glider there the last time I flew Chelan. Just north of Spokane. About 125 miles east of Chelan.

Got her out on the water for the first time yesterday in St. Helens. Boat hasnt been on the water in at least 5 years. She ran GREAT! Gonna spend some more time on her running the river before taking her to the salt. Got just a couple more things to install like new compass and bow lights, fishfinder. Trying to track down a tilt trailer, no luck yet. Keep and eye out for me. She aint much to look at but she should fish just fine. I will worry about cosmetics in the winter. Not sure about the clearance of the outdrive for beach launching looks like the skeg is going to drag...That 290 outdrive is a beast.
So new water pump, exhaust manifold zincs, out drive zincs, new belts and hoses, rebuilt the heat exchanger, new fuel pump, new seperator filter, new shift and throttle cables, converted duel carb and intake to single carb and intake with electric choke, resealed the outdrive, rewired bilge pumps and float switch, new perko switch, new cap and rotor, plugs and wires, set the timing and she runs awesome..no smoke!

A few more pics. Dont have a pic of the new intake manifold and carb yet. Should be interesting fishing around the center fish box. Cant remove the box yet because the aluminum fuel tank is under a portion of it. No time to reconfigure the deck till the winter, we want to fish not keep working on the boat! There will be some box hopping for sure! Main thing was to get her running again and get her rigged for sport fishing for now, cosmetics and dance floor will have to wait. Thank gawd for Cooks Marine they have had everything we've needed in stock.
