Looking for opinions on decent halibut / ling rods. I would like something that is a little sensitive and not just a broomstick, but will fish 3lb weights.

I have several Shimano Trevala TVC58XXH rods that I’ve paired with Diawa Tanacom 750 and 1000. I’ve fished 3-4lbs of lead at Halibut Hill and The Ranch… They make lighter rods in the line, but chose the extra/extra heavy for halibut, deep drop (long-leader) bottom fishing and for trolling for albacore tuna. It’s a very versatile rod, tough as nails and somewhat affordable considering it’s easy to drop $300 plus on a SoCal type offshore rod these days.

If Ugly Stick and Okuma make a lower end rod that is lighter and reasonably priced, but I wanted a mid-grade stick that would take lots of abuse and hold up. So far I’m very pleased 5 years in with the Trevala and Tanacom combos.

If you like to fish with circle hooks the Seeker CJBF60hb is a great rod. Sensitive tip to feel and see the bit and plenty of backbone to horse in a fish.

If you prefer J hooks, I'd recommend the Calstar Graphiter 770H it is a little stiffer in the tip which helps on hooksets

7 foot diawa boat Rod. fishermanā€˜s Marine 20 to 50 or 30 to 60 pound rating 20 bucks sidewalk sale every summer. Extended fore grip Fuji eyes great rods for the money and if somebody ruins one it doesn’t hurt so bad. Paid heed to what Ted says though (stick fish) my personal Rods are built by him and they are sweet

For the price, ugly sticks can’t be beat… I make my own rods… the one I use for what you describe is a ā€œLibertyā€ blank… PacBay make a good blank for this as well… be happy to show you if you are ever in Newport… I have the 5’ 8ā€ x heavy trevela that I paired with a tanacom 500, it is awesome from the pile in… I’ve got a loomis halibut rod with a myha-epoch on … great for 3 1/2 pounds and beyond in deep water… going to try a couple of spots a commercial guy gave me that are over 1000 feet this summer…

I have a 5' 6" Lamiglass halibut rod I will part with cheap. Of course, after Thursday it's a 5' halibut rod. It blew up about 6" from the end while a friend was pulling up hard on a good size fish. First time I've had a rod failure other than an oops moment in a long time. Fun times.
