I saw a post on here where someone mentioned a site called GPSfiledepot that had maps, some for free, that you can upload to your GPS.

Last year I bought the overlays from huntinggpsmaps for my computer, but did not pony up the money for the overlays for my gps. I figured I could do my research before my hunt and just have points in my gps that would help me distinguish public vs private. Truth of the matter is I found myself in need of a gps with the overlays at times since it can get tricky out there trying to decipher a map and what your gps is telling you, especially when it is really patchwork.

Long story short, I downloaded a map from gpsfiledepot called Oregon Topo and I was thoroughly impressed! It was free and had all the BLM land and FS land well marked. There is a disclaimer that it may not be 100% accurate to the gnats behind, but from my experiences on some of the patchwork BLM land I hunt it was spot on.

Just passing it along and also thanks to whomever first posted about this site on here.......

I must be missing something. I have a garmin Dakota 10 that I've been wanting mapping software, but haven't broke down for the $100 for either the garmin maps or huntinggps.com maps. So I download the oregon topo map onto my laptop. I find it find, and I drag and drop it onto my garmin. I can plug in my garmin via usp and see that its saved on the unit, but it is now showing up as a map that I can select in the map menu. Any ideas?

Hunting the CRC land that's checkerboard ownership, it would be nice to know for sure that you're camping on BLM rather than industrial forest. I can see it being beneficial for that.

My buddy lives in Albany. Says that his property just outside of town shows his name and is only 1 acre. But that's with the paid for chip.

Download and install them from the website. When you clicked the download a page should have loaded with some tutorials on how to install and load the software to the unit.

Then you will need to start either basecamp or map install. It will ask you to install the items. You are also able to customize what you want loaded.

I wish I could be more help, but I have been using a mac for two years now and own a Garmin 62ST.
There is a page on there that explains how to upload the maps onto your device. Did you use Basecamp? That seems to be a good way to go.......If it shows up on your GPS, it's there. On my GPs, you can load several maps and choose which one you want to display on your device. I guess I'm not sure exactly what your issue is. If it shows up on your device, can't you select it and then it should display right?????

Thanks guys. I got it figured out. I downloaded basecamp, once loaded plugged in my garmin. Right clicked on my gps and selected dowload maps, followed the promps and it works! This is really cool. I'm looking at some wilderness ground that I've hunted that is tough to get through and finding the trails I use, but also many others that I knew of, but wasn't sure where they were and where they went. This is very cool stuff!

download and install garmin basecamp
download and install the gpsfiledepot map.
restart basecamp
The topo map will show up in the map drop down list on basecamp.
pick the newly installed map from the drop down list.
plug an empty micro sd card into the computer
the sd card will show up in the "devices" panel in basecamp as a memory card
click on the "user data" of the memory card in basecamp
click "utilities" drop down menu on the upper basecamp menu bar
click "install map on memory card"

the map installer will open
make sure "memory card" is the device listed on the installer page, then "continue"

installer will open new window showing entire state map.
window around the whole state to select all map tiles

click "continue"
click "install" to install the map tiles to the sd card.
the map will be in a "garmin" folder on the sd card, this folder is =required=
I copy this map file to a folder on my pc and rename it to the state it repressents, ie; OR-TOPO.img

===
the map name will default to gmapsupp.img
this needs to be the map name for older gps units
on a newer gps, you can rename this map to reflect the state that it contains, keeping the .img extension.

basecamp needs individual map tiles, whereas the gps can only use a single .img file, that's why you need to install the maps to basecamp, then another install to the gps unit. The 2nd install compiles the tiles into a single image file.
