In the first thread several users mentioned about recognizing the conditions that trigger an attack and try to avoid those conditions. Great advice! I do not have severe asthma more of a minor aggravation when I get into the "conditions". Well my stockpile of PM is just about gone and the wife comes homes and says check this out. The brand name is Asthmanefrin and the active ingredient is Receoinephrine, it is OTC and when I had a reason to try it out, WOW, that stuff works good. You can get it at Wallgreens.

This is an amazing development.

65 years ago I was placed on "Asthmanephrin" (prescription) by my pediatrician. I don't know what the exact formulary was, but the medicaton was pulled off the market about 20 years later. Ultimately albuterol, then later albuterol plus ipratroprium (Combivent and Duo-Neb), were made available, but only by prescription.

This is a stereoisomer of epinephrine, is presumably safe and may be effective for any number of inflammatory challenges (bee-stings, inhaled allergens, etc.). Time will tell, as the FDA is just now beginning to collect safety data.

I am absolutely tickled for the many episodic asthma sufferers out there who may be unable to afford proscription medications.

If you have symptoms of asthma or COPD, you should see a physician ASAP. But at least this new/old medication gives you an alternative.

One important caution is that epinephrine has a stimulative effect on heart rate. That would concern me.

Still best to see your physician first.

Thanks Thumber, the history aspect was very interesting and safety warnings are spot on, thanks again. But even better and that I am happy about is that the medication has been out there for so long. It just scares the hell out of me when you see all these FDA approved "safe" drugs that 10, 15, 20 years down the road find out that they are not all that safe. Even worse, you open up a magazine and there is a one page wonder drug ad and a 3 page warning. May cause yellowing of the eyes, bad breath deafness, excessive brain cell damage, explosive diarrhea, fingers falling off, blindness, decreased sex drive, bla bla bla bla, all of this just because a person has has zits. No Thanks!!!

Welp! It's back. Primatene on the shelves at certain places now.
Walgreens, when I called them in Salem, are asking $39.99/unit! :excited: Last time I got it, it was $18.00!
I called the Stayton pharmacy, and they, nor Bi-mart carry it.
But the Stayton pharmacy guy told me to check cvs.com. They have it online for $29.99, with 3 to 7 business days for delivery.
Gonna get some for backup, when my VA inhalers are late. :meme:

Yes it does work! And almost instantly.
Wonder why it's 10 bux less in Newport, than in Salem?
But I'll go with the CVS stuff for about the same as Newport's price.
Only gonna use it for extreme cases or when the VA stuff runs out.
I can get the pills locally, but don't much like using them. They make me feel like I just drank 15 cups of coffee in a short time. Plus slower acting.
I used the mist for over 40 years, and it worked well. But that Epi stuff isn't good for your hear, or the enamel on your teeth. My teeth have paid for the years of use. But I'm still alive! :meme:
My teeth, not so much.
Re-take.
Went to Walgreens in Salem today. Only $30.00. Not the $40.00 they quoted me over the phone.
160 puffs. But that shake, then spray in the air boloney won't fly. Not gonna waste 60 puffs in the air! :palm:
