Flu Shot?

Saw my doc and decided to get this year's flu and RSV shots. They were out of the RSV so got the flu while I was there. I'm neither pro nor con on the annual flu vaccine. Basically the medico powers that be decide which variant is going to be the biggest problem and start cracking eggs. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss. So, sometimes I get the shot, sometimes not. This year I did.

Damn that sucker hurts! Feels more like a tetanus shot. Really sore arm and shoulder after the second day. Never had a reaction like this to a flu shot before. Normally I just feel a bit queasy the next morning until I get moving but then it goes away. No queasiness this time, just a sore arm.

Question of the day, is it just me?

I'm not sure if it is just you or not. In the past, I've known other people that hurt from vaccinations of all types.

I typically have injection site pain from flu shots and sometimes it is really sore. The odd piece for me is that my arm hurts a little less than normal for this flu shot. I also think the amount of use impacts the amount of pain. I find when I do something active, yard work or exercise... it hurts less.

Having been sick for the past week, hopefully I'll be good for whatever is floating around this winter, or at least that is my hope! I typically don't get the shot as I typically don't get sick, but not all years are typical ;)

I am taking a 2mg nicotine pouch every day and starting an antihistamine nasal spray that has good effectiveness against cold and flu. Laying on your side and cleaning your ears with hydrogen peroxide is also a great preventive step as there are many studies indicating the relationship between viruses and infection through the ear.

You know you guys can do whatever you want too but I’m pretty much done with shots. I did everything that I was supposed to during Covid. Shots booster etc. Moderna. Still came down with that sh$t 3 times with the last dose being 2 years ago. My sense of smell and taste have never recovered. And when I did have it was not anything horrible. Usually when I get sick (not often) I get really sick. But since I’ve been retired and not working around sick people it’s been much better. My Doctors and some of you on here convinced me too get the Shingles shots. Glad I did that for sure and no issues. Honestly I think that if you live a healthy lifestyle you won’t be prone to getting sick all the time. Eat right and get a good amount of sleep plus an active lifestyle is conducive to good health. There are so many sickly people out of shape humans in this world and I’m not going to be like that. Some are disgusting and many are ā€œyoungerā€. Throwing their life away. I might reconsider the Flu shot. My wife just got hers and no issues. But I just have a really hard time believing or trusting the medical advice of the CDC or any other government health agency. Especially with Covid. When one half of the ā€œsmartā€ people say get the shots and the other half of the ā€œsmartā€ people say not to who are you going to believe? I’m with Kennedy. Let the people decide if they want to or not. I’ve lived long enough to make decisions for myself. There’s that.;)šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Never really thought about this…. I get mine some years, but not ever. Kinda depends on how I remember how long my arm was sore from the last time. Got it last year, hurt like hell. Skipped this year…

Do you know what’s in the cocktail this year? What should people be aware of?

@ForaFrank what are the ingredients in the current flu vaccine?

@Chad D. It’s a good question. Thinking about what’s in this year's "cocktail" is worthwhile, especially since the recipe has changed. For the 2024-2025 season, health authorities have switched from a four-strain (quadrivalent) vaccine to a three-strain (trivalent) one. The reason is simple: one of the old influenza B strains hasn't been seen in the wild since 2020, so it was retired from the team.

This year’s shot is designed to teach your immune system what to look for by targeting three specific viruses: one H1N1, one H3N2 (both are Influenza A types), and one Influenza B virus. Beyond those active components, the vaccine also contains small amounts of other ingredients. These include stabilizers to keep the vaccine effective, preservatives in multi-dose vials to prevent contamination, and trace amounts of byproducts from the manufacturing process, like egg protein. For anyone with a serious egg allergy, egg-free versions are available. The sore arm many people feel is just the local immune response waking up and getting to work—an unfortunate but generally good sign.

True, the form of mercury found in fish bioaccumulates and the albacore off the Oregon coast are only a few years old at most, so they haven’t had enough time to absorb much mercury. Same with salmon. If I ate a lot of the longer lived rockfish I’d probably give a little more thought to those.

The form of mercury in vaccines is different and doesn’t bioaccumulate as your body generally gets rid of it quickly. It is also a very small amount and not shown to be associated with any problems in the small amount in vaccines. I am personally not concerned with it.

Thimerisol in a flu shot is about as harmful as weed killer (glyphosate) in your ice cream.
I don't know if it's that bad, but there is a lot of money to keep us from asking the question.

I know a few people who got flu symptoms every time they took the flu shot. So they stopped taking it. I haven't taken the flu shot for a few years, but I'm not exposed to that many people directly.

The skill of the technician can have a lot to do with pain thereafter, it's really technique sensitive! During the covid times I considered having a bullseye tattooed at the sweet spot.

In my office as a general rule the more a person uses the internet to make decisions related to their health, the more unhealthy they are. The folks who follow the guidelines combined with the customized advice of their Dr. (assuming they know each other well) are better off.

And when some grumpy fisherman comes in and has every self inflicted condition that has a name but doesn't want a vaccine no one is surprised!

It seems like everyone uses the internet to make decisions. That is, if they have the internet ... they just believe different sites. That leads to different conclusions.

Of course, many Drs aren't exactly breaking new ground. Instead, they are just following the rules they were told to.

Vaccines are good without a doubt. HOWEVER, when the CDC forced Wirriam-Webster to change the dictionary definition of "vaccine" to fit the new king's narrative...AND I got Covid 3 times AFTER receiving the "Vaccine"...that's it; I'm done.

I've had the flu one time in my entire life. That was in '93 when I worked for Weyerhaeuser, and they marched us through the booth like cattle to get the corporate mandated flu shot. THEN they had to shut the whole mill down because most everyone got sick!

And that's all I have to say about that...

I’ve had the Rona twice.

I’ve had worse hangovers.

The people I know in the medical field recommend the flu shot and the RSV for someone my age.
Even they don't get the covid shot unless they are forced.

Back to the subject, my flu shot hurt for a couple days come to think of it.

I haven't had a flu shot in probably 8 or 9 years. Skipped CoVid vaccines and boosters completely. Got CoVid two years ago, had a bunch of rotating symptoms and was easily tired for a couple of months. I have lived thru a few flu's over the years that were way tougher. I took the shingles vaccine and I get tetanus boosters when they come due.

Stay away from doctors and hospitals if possible, eat good stuff, stay physically busy and get enough sleep. That's my plan anyway. 71 and cruisin'

Take your vitamin D.

It’s really funny when it comes to vaccines and the medical profession in general. They treat us like we’re never supposed to get sick and if we do we’ve somehow failed the system. Complete BS. We get sick, we’re supposed to, it’s what keeps our immune system on alert so when we do get something, we get over it.

Spot on concerning vitamin D. Lots of D3/K2 along with magnesium and zinc. If a bug does come along, then I break out the sovereign silver.
