Fishing Rituals

I’ve made such a habit out of drinking a cup of coffee and eating a cookie while driving to the spot, that it feels wrong to not do it.

I also have a buddy I salmon fish with a lot, and anytime we go out together and both catch our limits, we get ice cream on the way home. It’s a rare occurrence, but has happened enough times to be a ritual. He’s out for the count after a bad car accident, but I look forward to more ice cream days in the future.

What are your fishing rituals?

Getting my butt out of bed.

My ritual is to forget one thing that doesn't derail the trip, but which i really miss. I'll bring an extra rod to throw some hardware but forget to bring the spinner and spoon box. I'll forget a baseball cap to wear under my rain hood. I'll forget my socks so I have to wear my waders barefoot or I'll forget to bring long underwear pants so I have to wear them over my shorts on a cold day. Last week I forgot my wading boots and had to wear a spare pair that was in the truck (I took three hard falls that day).

I’m glad that I’m not the only one. I consider myself to be one of the world’s worst procrastinators. I can plan a trip weeks in advance, but rarely do I decide to get the boat and gear ready until the evening prior. Since I hardly ever do it between trips, I find myself tying new leaders, droppers, bumpers, etc., way past the time I SHOULD have gone to bed. Then of course, I cannot go to sleep right away, which leads to only getting a 2-3 hr nap before I need to get up. This ritual is performed no matter if I am taking my boat, filling a seat in a buddy’s boat, or fishing from the bank.

When fishing in Mexico, my buddy and I make sure we take a strip of Oreo cookies in our lunch pack. We each eat one to change the trend of the day, then accept whatever comes our way .... unless we decide to eat another to change course again. Cheers, CopperMan.

On a personal note, I follow FishRepellor's advice. They ain't no ban'o in a panga.

I had to stop at ta in troutdale at popeyes 'before' fishing. It fon't matter my finget has all that crispy chocken oil....haven't nade a dent in fishing so far (i waah the heck out of hand before fishing 😁)
It feels out of place if I don't stop there...luckily my fisging bud is equally into popeyes. One fast food which counts towards my weekness. 🤣

I used to fish with a guy who was in recovery and thus didn't partake in whatever mind alterations the rest of us were doing. After someone in the boat would hook up and land or lose a fish, he always asked the question "OK, what were we talking about?"

It always made me laugh. The funny thing was that out of maybe 50+ instances where he asked that, there was not a single time where anyone in the boat could remember what the conversation was when the fish bit. I challenge all to try this out. It's hard.

After being diagnosed with PTSD and then ADHD with a 1/4 teaspoon of OCD thrown in, I should refrain from discussing my rituals for fear of crashing the server. I will say that twearking on the boat before dropping pots and eating ice cream on the tailgate in sub freezing weather after a bird hunt put out real good juju.

For more than 50 years my buddy (member atsilak) and I no matter what or where we're fishing for before the rod goes in the holder for the 1st drop of the day we have a saying: fishy fishy in the brook come and bite our F'n hook. At days end rack the rods, put away the net and a have a shot of Royal Crown
