I forgot to put some smoked steelhead away and came home and my two dogs ate about a six inch piece of the fish. Im wondering if there is a chance of them getting salmon poising, the fish was throughly smoked and not raw. I've checked info on line and think they should be fine, any info from you guys would be great, thanks -grant

My dog got into smoked salmon once, he was fine - I did call the vet to see what signs to look for. She told me that the poisinging is actually caused by a parasite, but only if the parasite is infected... But Cooking, Smoking/curing, and freezing all do a good job of killing the parasite.

To prevent this from happening again, bring all your smoked salmon to my house.

As I sit here reading this, me and the dog are eating some smoked salmon and steelhead. Been feeding him smoked fish for 10 years. When I need to have him come to my side and he is busy sniffing whatever, I just yell out it time for fish. He beats me to the door every time.

He eats smoked salmon with me 3 to 4 times a week. When its time to smoke fish, he sits and guards the smoker most of the day. Have a picture of him around somewhere of him doing this.

Your dog will be ok and will be back for more now that he has the taste. Just be careful when you are at the river that he does not start looking for guts from fish that anglers leave behind on the bank. This will do him in. Mine got into some when he was a pup and it almost killed him.

Did your dog enjoy the poached salmon the other day? We all know he digs smoked salmon, but poached?

Once cooked salmon and steelhead is actually quite healthy for the dogs. The omega three fats are great for a good colorful and healthy coat.

My dog gets fish treats all the time. From sauteed salmon to smoked salmon he dogs it all

When Giz (the dog not the old bald headed fart) is on the boat he tries to eat all of the bait. lol.

haha! thats what I was going say. My boys friend left out a piece of smoked springer last night, so instead of tossing it I mixed it in with our pups food. Talk about a tail wag! Also, I have been mixing in the BBQ fish when its been in the fridge a few days. I don't think I will be able to hunt over her since her coat is way too shiny now!!!!!!

I've "heard" that salmon first have to get the parasite (I think from some food they eat) and then it is mostly in the blood too. I have a friend whos dog got into a steelhead carcass and he came to near death. Being that it was a smoked chunk of meat though I'm sure it was much safer. It takes 2 weeks to be sure they're outta the clear. My girlfriends 6lb Pom got into some salmon eggs one day at the beach and we gave him some antibiotics just to be sure but it was probably uneccesary just my:twocents:
