I happened to refer to our sofa as a daveno today and my wife what asked on earth I was talking about. I told her that was what we always called it growing up in Oregon and Washington. She said she had never heard the word before. I found this odd, so I looked it up.
Seems it is Pacific Northwest-speak for Davenport, one of the largest original manufacturers of what are now widely called sofas and couches.
I'll be darned. The process of fossilization continues apace.

I with you on this one too, Bill.

The Urban Dictionary says:
daveno
A sofa or couch. The term was more widely used in the 50's and 60's, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. I fell asleep on the daveno.

I never heard it in Southern California, but sure did when we moved to Oregon in the late-70's spoken by those who lived here for years.

I remember growing up my Grandmother always used the term "Davenport" when referring to the sofa/couch. She also used words like trousers and fridge. Fridge was used because the only brand of refrigerator they ever purchased was a Frigidaire. They also exclusively purchased Studebakers until they were no longer manufactured.

My family owned furniture stores since 1958. A daveno is like a sofa but the back of the daveno will lay completely flat. You grab the back of the devan and tip it towards you and release and it lays out flat. There was another sofa called a bedding box, you would lift the seat and pull towards you and up, it also would lay out flat "but" there was storage under the seat.

I Love this I live in Oregon and my grandpa used to always say "well I guess I'll go take a nap stretch on the Davenport". We later shortend it to daveno but still use davenport at times when we are feeling extra jackassy.
