#4 buck is the cheap way to go. As a waterfowler you should know the lethality of Hevi-shot. That Dead Coyote is a long range performer. It's not like shooting ducks....you won't need a box of 25 to get your limit Dan. How many coyotes are you thinking you are going to shoot? How much does it cost per round of Hevi-shot? How far are you driving/mpg to get to shoot at a coyote?

All that said #4 buck is deadly.

What I personally think is that the buck shot will out perform the hevishot a lot cheaper also. I have shot tons of deer with buck shot over the years in the piney woods of Texas and in Virgina and Connitcut once taking one at 100 yds in my yonger dumber years. Just my opinon.

 

Tons of dear with buckshot??....isnt that ummm inhumane??...wouldnt a slug be better???...100 yards??....hmmmm and I have seen you shoot at things that ummmm are only at 20 yards...hehehe

 

Well the reason is easy. If you hunt in an area that is restricted to non toxic shot you cant use 00 or 000. I hunt lots of the same area I waterfowl hunt and can't use lead.State wildlife area and certian federal lands prohibit the use of lead shot. bushshot is shot.

Only when waterfowl hunting. If you coyote hunt the same area after waterfowl season you can have anysize shot as long as its not lead. I hunted ducks with a guy that kept slugs and lead buckshot. in his pack for coyotes and got a big ticket when he got caught. I have heard that hevi-shot in BB is great on coyote.Have not tried it but that would solve all the problems. About the rifle comment, There are lots of places to hunt coyote that you cant shoot rifles.

 

Uh oh...opened a can of worms there. Say I'm goose hunting and want to carry some coyote loads....which would be worse to a LEO, carrying something marked "Dead Coyote" that's oversized or std #4 Buck that's LEAD.

yes both are not legal on a refuge. but here is something i do and i doubt i'll stop. when i'm jump shooting a river, in cougar country i'll have a few 00 buck in my pocket (just in case) but i won't do it on a refuge

 

We switched from Dead Coyote to Black Cloud this year. Price is a bit better, and just as much reachout / pattern power. If you shoot enough of any of this stuff, you'll see the performance difference.

honestly, just go pattern each of them and then chose...but then again, you have to buy a box of each to try...LOL That's the fun part!

 

why use a shotgun on yotes??? when they die just as good with a rifle.

 

Try shooting a running coyote at 30 or less yards with a scoped rifle and you'll see why.

I killed close to a dozen called coyotes with my shotgun this past season. Some with #4 buck, some with Dead Coyote and one with Hevi Shot BB's. Of the coyotes shot with Dead Coyote I had at least 3 run off into the heavy sage. All coyotes were under 40 yards and closer to 30 than 40. Of the coyotes shot with buckshot they died right where they were hit. The ones that ran off weren't counted as kills. I've been ordering 3 1/2" Winchester #4 buckshot loads from the Sportsman's Guide at less than half the price as the Dead Coyote stuff. The 3 1/2" load gives you 52 pellets. I've been using the Dead Coyote choke for both types of shot and the buckshot patterns nicely through it.

IMHO the Dead Coyote stuff is over hyped and is way too expensive for what you get. Slugs and 00 buck give you a disadvantage in that you have fewer pellets or a single projectile much like a rifle. The main disadvantage with the 3 1/2" buckshot loads is that it kicks like you can't believe. I never feel it when I'm shooting at a coyote, tho.

I hunt waterfowl at Umatilla. I've never shot anything larger than BBB's there but I thought T's were legal. T's are what's in 3 1/2" Dead Coyote.

As somebody mentioned, some areas don't allow lead shot at all. Which was my original reason. I've shot a dozen or so deer and several coyotes with lead buckshot, and the hevi shot is a noticeable difference. The deer I've shot with lead will often run a 100 yards or more jumping fences and creeks with no problem. Sometimes you wonder if you hit them or not. Even with several hits through the lungs.

The Deer shot buy the same size hevi shot (00), often drop in thier tracks and if not rarely go more than a few feet. We've had several broadside pass through shots as far as 70 yards away. With the hevi shot, you know when you hit em. It really crushes them. When they are able to move, they walk, they don't run and they don't go far.
There have been several test done and the patterning aside, the hevi-shot usually out penatrates lead by 30-50%. It is more exspensive, but in a season I rarely shoot more than 10$ worth on deer and maybe 30$ worth for the yotes. With the price of gas and everything else it is a small exspense.

And the piece of mind it gives me when I shoot a deer and can tell that I hit it is worth it. I've recovered every deer I've shot with buckshot, but the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach while I look for 15mins or sometimes even an hour isn't any fun.

Lead will work and has for years, but Hevi-shot works better.IMHO

I know a few waterfowl hunters in Alaska that carry hevishot on refuges for the bears. Don't know any that've used it, but they carry it.

 

are they on state refuge or federal? i wonder if the state can allow the use.

 

T steel is legal. bb heavy shot is the largest legal waterfowl size pellet

 

I watched a guy kill a coyote with a standard turkey load on a hunting show today. The dog came into his calling and it looked like about a 40 yard shot. It put the coyote down pretty efficiently.

 

I once shot one with a 7-1/2 shot reload at ~25-30yds. Front on face shot, dropped on the spot.
But I have tyo admit... I was surpised it did.

I carry the "Dead coyote" when I'm hunting lands that require nontoxic shot and are shotgun restricted.

Yes its expensive, but its the only answer in these situations.

 

When hunting with a partner it's usually a good idea for one to be holding a shotgun. Years ago, my brother & I had 4 coyotes come in on a dead run. Bro dropped the 1st one with the .223 when he stopped at 15 yards (they always stop if you don't spook em). I dropped the two behind him with loads of #4 buck and would've gotten the 4th if hadn't run behind my bro. I killed one last fall with 3.5" steel BBB at 50 yards but it did take 3 shots to put him down.
