Cedar Fence Cost - WOW

Admittedly it's been almost 10 years since I last had some cedar fence put up. It's time to replace a border fence with the neighbor so looking at about 80' with two 5' non-gate wings that attach to our houses. First bid - $5100. And that's with wood posts vs galv steel cased with cedar. That twice the price for less than half the length of last time.

Is that a result of this transitory inflation I've been hearing about the last couple years?

Back in '21, our neighbor approached us about splitting the cost of replacing a not quite 40' section of cedar fence between us. We said go ahead, prior to any quote. Our half of the cost was nearly $3K. No gates, just plain old 6' cedar privacy fence with a 2x4 top cap. No warranty unless the fence company pulled and replaced the perfectly good 4x6 posts. Prices seem to have come down since then!

West Salem. The fence I put in before has slats all on one side with a 2x4 top cap and a 3/4 x 3 or furring strip under it. Back side is just 2x4 frame. The fake post extends a few inches above the rail cap and has a tophat to keep water from going inside the tube post.

Find you a fencing ā€œcrewā€ out working. Not hard to find. Ask them if they do side work. You’ll get it done for half of that. Pick out your materials at Home Depot and the cost will be even less. I took good ā€œcareā€ of the crews that worked for me and keep their contact information on hand. All the crews that did work for me ( Sheetrock roofing painting and landscaping) were Hispanic guys. Many today are very close friends. There’s a reason for that. And the quality of their work was unsurpassed. We’ve owned 10 different houses and when we were younger we did almost all the work ourselves. We couldn’t afford what most guys were asking. We got older and my how the times have changed. As a matter of fact just ask any Hispanic crew if they know someone who does fencing and it won’t take long to find you crew. FWIW. :)šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Mid '70s I was trucking and hauled many loads of cedar shingles from the Washington coast down to the LA area and hauled cast iron pipe north. One of the shake mill owners told me they were having trouble finding cedar logs back then and some were pulled up off lake bottoms, so wet you could squeeze water out of them by hand. And while dropping off one load at a building site down south, the contractor told me he used 3-tab on his house.

Well, three more quotes coming so will figure out the best 'value' - not price - after they are in.

Cedar shingles for roofing is yesterday's news. All the really "good" cedar in the U.S. has been gone for a while. It's all about the oil content and great heartwood. All this cedar fencing today is sappy second growth. It will rot in no time. The good cedar has that beautiful dark brown color and is all heartwood. You can still buy great Cedar but it's going to come out of Canada and is sawn mostly into Timbers, Finish and High-Grade Dimension lumber. It is extremely expensive due to availability. To be totally honest there are a few guys still pulling some old growth Cedar logs out of the bottoms of Canyons., Falling old snags and wherever they can find those old logs. Getting harder to find by the day. I know an old guy in Garabaldi who was a "Cedar Maggot". He scrounged and hunted that type of log for over 30 years to cut into Shake Bolts. It was brutal hard work for sure. Just another reason for the high cost of good Cedar. :)šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬US

Rebuilding a bit of the deck at home recently. Needed a couple of 4x4 clear cedar posts to match existing with 2x6 top caps on section of stairs with railing. Went to Parr. Neglected to ask pricing. Dumb. One clear ten-foot 4x4 was enough for the two posts. One clear 8-foot 2x6 was good for the rail caps. I had picket material. Couple of years ago I built an entire 100-foot fence out of clear cedar from Custom Cedar Products in Portland and it was spendy, but not crazy so I didn't ask about price at Parr. Again dumb and it seemed too late when ringing out. The 10-foot clear 4x4 was $145. The clear 2x6 was $95. Two sticks wood = $235. Telling the truth. Crazy. Should have walked. Looks nice, but not $235 nice. I am willing to bet the fence I built in about 2018 would cost at least 4 or 5 times more today. It's either product scarcity or the profit gouging has run off the rails everywhere I spend money from the grocery store to the hardware store. Inflation is pretty high worldwide right now. The US is obviously no exception, but is actually in the middle of the pack on the lower side of the mean average across all the countries. We are being bent over under the guise of inflation on every damned thing I buy. I don't generally eat fast food, but couldn't prevent it today. Something like $9.50 for a taco and a crappy burrito.......really?
