So I have been looking at the Sportsman 160 and the max person weight is 525 lbs? It is rated for 4 people, but in all reality, 525 lbs is barely 3 normal sized dudes? My buddy has a 14 foot klamath jon boat and its max weight is 660 lbs? Is this normal, or what?

A 14 footer is a 2-person boat. A 16 footer is a 3 person boat. The weight limits include all the gear on the boat -gas, battery, tackle, coolers, etc. As a general rule, don't exceed 70 or 80% of the capacity rating, lest the boat get tippy and squirrely.

If you want to take 4 or more, you need a bigger boat.

tinman is right and with that said I have seen and been on boats that we have exceed the mfg. weight limit and the boat was fine. but as a captin of the boat you are responsable for the cargo and people on board, not only can the boat police wright you up for exceding the limit but if there was a serious accident your you know what will be hanging out there, you would probably be better off looking for a higher capacity rated boat. sorry :twocents:

My 14' smokercraft is rated for 24 horse max, 4 people at 150 pounds each or gross weight of 800 pounds. As Tinnman said, a 14' boat is a 2 person boat and so on.

I've had 4 people in my boat, with a 15 horse Johnson, it was fishable but definitely felt heavy and I was on my A game. Not that I'm not ever on that game anyways.

I would think a 16' boat would have more than a 525 pound capacity unless they have figured into the weight cap the highest powered engine allowable on the boat, cutting into the weight capacity of passengers.

Better safe than sorry. If you really plan on buying it, get two other beefy looking guys to go with you for a test run and see how she behaves. nothing like buying a boat without testing it with your intended loads. Heck it might not even be able to get up on plane with three fat dudes. Who knows. Last thing you want to find out- that you can only fish with one other buddy instead of your two favorite buds.

550# for a 16' sounds low, however length is not always a good indicator of how much tonnage a vessel can carry. How narrow is the sportsman boat? A low side narrow boat would logically be rated lower. Some john boats or skiffs made for calm water like you have in the southern U.S. are built differently and have lower weight capacity than a same length deep and wide V hull.

Regular boats in general don't have much cargo capacity.

This is why scuba divers use inflatables. My 16' Tracker has a limit of 6 people or 950 lbs 60hp. My 13'9" Zodiac has cargo of 2300 lbs and a 55 hp rating.
