We're heading up to the Hood Canal area in a couple of weeks and will be staying at Belfair State Park. We plan to take our boat, 21' North River, and thought I would check to see if anyone has any experience there in regards to fishing, crabbing, clam digging, etc. Also would like any feedback on the state park as we have never visited there before and not familiar with the area at all. I've read that crabbing can be good there too, but guessing it's a bad time of year for that. Any suggestions, advice, or otherwise would be appreciated.

Hood canal is a tough nut to crack. Low oxygen levels makes the salmon fishing "interesting" . There is a good king fishery based on the Skokomish river. Biggest problem is mass numbers of jelly fish. Bottom line on this fishery is fish shallow, above 50'. Troll the shore lines with spoons and keep it fast..............watchout for the tribal nets. They know where the fish are too. Jigs work well too. Find the fish off the points and look for bait. I usually don't fish this one much, fewer problems and better biters available elsewhere. :twocents:

Heard good things about Belfair but others may have accurate info.

Coho will start to show soon. I'm fishing out of Union or Potlatch depending on the tide. Humpies now and the kings are just starting to show.

Dring a bottle of distilled vinegar to kill the sting from the red (lions mane?) jellies.
Oh, for the coho try a Teespoon or Clearwater Flash behind a two to three ounce sinker. Rememer to rig the spinners with single point, barbless hooks.
WDFW Enforcement has been out on the Canal the last three times I was up there. They were looking to be sure the gear was barbless. FYI :twocents:

I lived in the area for 15 years. We still have a beach place on the Puget Sound side of Belfair.
Belfair State Park is a beautiful place. But, as the previous post indicates, the low oxygen levels have basically eliminated the crab and fish populations. They are slowly recovering but are still very poor.
You can get oysters on the beach at the State Park.
There is good crabbing on the Puget Sound side of Belfair. There is a boat launch at Allyn and you can get alot of crab in Case inlet but they will be Red Rock Crab.
There is also a Blackmouth fishery on the north end of Hartstene Island. THey were getting a few fish last weekend between Streach Island (north of Hartstene) and around Anderson Island.
Have a good time.
