Finally let an arrow fly today. Drew on 2 bigger bulls earlier in the season but neither stepped forward into the clear. Held on this guy for what felt like 2 minutes, then his two steps cleard 35 yard shot. Glad I heard where he went because only a few drops of blood in 30 seconds it took him to go 200 yards, snap off the 6 inches of arrow that didn't bury, and pile up where I thought I heard him. Ambush style, right place, right time, no calls, just before sunrise. These highly pressured elk are sooooo hard to get close to.
UPDATE: The rest of the story. At 64 years old I hope I have a couple more bulls to go, but probably not another day like today. Shot bull at first light, after a wait had him photographed and tagged by 9am, had him boned out and bagged by noon, just got the last load to the truck as the sun is setting now. My bull 2 years ago took me 3 days to pack out. So, a great day. Now time for dinner and a beer.
