Congrats again - there is some real character in that elk! And yes, Halfway, Richland and that area is great! Thank you for taking the time and sharing.

Fusions! That's what I'm shooting on my limited draw tag this year! I've shot them all spring and summer and they really seem to get along well with my Model 700 30-06.
When I bought the 270 wsm 2 years ago factory ammo was hard to come by - still is. I bought several different factory ammo including Winchester accubonds and Federal coppers. Neither shot worth a darn. The fusions shot the best. I’m sub moa. I shot a cow last year with it and now this bull. Last year I took the cow down with one shot. Also hit bone and blew up. Same this year.

Packing up and signing off of this hunt.

Loved the blow by blow story, was nice to experience. Seems a little shy on the Elk pics. Any other pics to share?

Been without my computer since Friday so haven't been able to follow this thread - fantastic ending congrats to you on a fine bull. And another thanks for taking us along - been a fun one to follow (y)

I was lucky enough to have drawn this tag this fall. I grew up in eastern Canada and have shot a lot of whitetails over years but when I moved to the PNW the dense west side hunting discouraged me and I stuck to duck hunting the first 15 years after moving here (I did a little archery hunting when I first got here). 5 years ago I got the itch to get back into big game hunting and I’ve gotten several nice deer and 2 cow elk. I’ve never shot a bull.

I’ve hunted north of LM in Keating, Ches, Imnaha, and Sled Springs but this will be my first hunt in this unit.

Next weekend I’m going to make my first trip into the unit and start the scouting process. I’m intending to make a lot of trips in August (I also need to do some scouting in Keating for my boys deer tag) with my main push for the hunt in September. I’d like to hold off to the peak of the rut to have an opportunity to hunt with a rifle while they’re all fired up.

I’m not sure how many are interested but I intend to post how my scouting and hunting is going on this thread. I always enjoy reading and watching peoples hunts so hopefully you all might get some enjoyment out my adventures.

I’m hopeful to get an opportunity to shoot a nice bull. Regardless it’s going to be a great chance for me to spend a lot of time in the field.
I just finished reading through this thread it was an awesome play by play! Congratulations on your bull! I was fortunate enough to draw the lookout mountain premium elk tag this year, I was wondering if you have any tips or advice you'd be willing to share? Any help is appreciated and congrats again!

Thanks. If you haven’t I would call the bio. Although I did get some good ideas from fellow ifish members - the intel I got from the bio in Baker was also invaluable.

My advice. Call bio. Don’t waste time in August other than maybe getting lay of the land. Go in September to hunt. And expect it to be hot. Mid to late September (before deer hunt) is when I’d focus.

They do/did have a youth hunt in the last half of October so be aware of that. Have no idea what the timing of your hunt is. Be a good idea to have ON-X, lots of private.

Happy to chat with you. I helped Mallrdkiller2 out a bit. I'll see if a pm comes thru for ya.

Fire started over there yesterday along the river road near daybreak ranch. Talked to my friends that live just down the road towards Richland way, and it sounded like BLM and Fire had decent containment. Friends are without power, and they were told by Idaho power they have to replace about 20 poles to get it restored.
