Considering options for a 12V pot puller. I would prefer to use it with my current crab davit but interested in the options that you have used and found successful.

Thanks

+1 on the Scotty puller. You still have to lift the pot over the gunnel, but they work great for pulling heavy pots up in deep water.

If you can wait till spring, the Washington Costco's have been carrying them during shrimping season for killer prices. I got mine for $379.

I think that one feature of a traditional davit, being arched,it that it gets the pots above the gunnel. This surely makes it easier to get the pots into the boat. You can cut your existing davit and install an electric windlass in line. Plug it in and you're ready to go.

I have experience with only one pot puller so don't know how they compare. Mine is an E Z Pull. Took my davit off the boat and up to Buck, he mounted the pot puller on my davit. I've had it about 10 or 11 years and it's worked fine every time I've used it. I'm happy with it and my crew is even more happy it's on the boat!

The ace line hauler puller now has one with more torque then their Brutus 40 plus. They are calling it Max Torque. I saw their add yesterday in a magazine and they are saying it easily pulls up 110 lbs. Based on how my Brutus 40 plus has pulled up monster loaded pots that we could barely get over the rail into the boat that new unit might have enough pull to damage some equipment. I think Ace under-estimates their equipment.

I spend the bulk of my time on the salt fishing with Bob ("Inpho" on here) on his 21ft Seahawk. He has a Crabby Lift and that thing is the best! I love it! I've never used the Ace pot puller, but it's hard to image a better davit than the Crabby Lift.

Electa-Dyne is the Cadillac of pullers-spendy but worth it. They are made in Boston for lobster boats. I and many friends have them on our boats. I recommend the stainless one. They are made for commercial use so they last . You buy them direct from manufacture.
You can order two different gear box configurations. Mine is 30 to 1.This will be your last puller you ever buy.
check them out.

Crabby Lift for me and have had for years BUT:
The switch is crap. Broke it twice so finally put on my own toggle switch.
It was getting corrosion until I started hosing it down with Salt Away and letting it dry off leaving suds all over it, and then hit it with CorrosionX spray on areas where it could rust. Makes it like new! Had an extender made when I switched boats so it lifts over the side (otherwise, why have it?). I found out that the angle between the pulley and the wind up roller is critical or the rope will pinch and wind up on itself so if you make an extension, make sure the holes are drilled so that the pulley is a little away from the roll up roller side so the rope wants to ride on the inside of the roller when pulling in.

I guess this as much.
I love my Honda motors but not one on my davit. Salt would be brutal on that over time I would think.
At $995 you could buy two for the price of my electra dyne.
At least with the gearbox on the electra dyne its super powerful and very quiet.
Lats why all the New England boats use them in the lobster fishery.

(The Electradyne pullers are sexy, but are a major investment)
I fish for tuna every year so 2 boat bucks for a crab puller that will outlive me seems pretty cheap really and that includes the davit/ pulley and all the fixings.

I welded a plate on my davit and then attached the Ace motor and sheave to mine. Always seems to get the job done, but it is not a speed demon by any means. Works fine for crabbing around here, but I sure would miss the Honda gas pulling shrimp pots.

A friend of mine has a similar set up with the E Z Pull. I like that one better. Seems to have more power and a little faster. Figured if I have to replace it in the future, I would upgrade to the E Z.
