Decided on a Yamaha 8 hp trolling motor so question is would it be worth the axtra bucks for power tilt an trim for a trolling motor. My boat is a alumaweld super v. So trolling motor will be tiller. Any info from current owners of a power tilt Yamaha would be helpful

We had a Yamaha 8 with the power tilt. The tilt function did not last a long time. Yes we use it in salt but we always properly clean everything. You would never know it was in salt after 8 years or so of use aside from some minor paint bubble.

With all that being said we switched to a Suzuki kicker that came with everything and we love it.

Yamaha makes a great motor. Some of the “extras” they offer seem to be questionable however.

I'm guessing you will have electric start so will be hooked to a battery anyway. So, yes on the power tilt.
Have it on my 2014 9.9 never had a problem with it. Lifting my buddies kicker by hand on a rough , whitecap lake isn't that much fun.

I can't ever thinking I wish my T8 didn't have electric tilt/start and I sure don't like lifting them manually. If I need to trim in shallow water, I can do it without letting go of the tiller and still have a rod in the other hand.
I believe many people that have problems with the electric tilt don't use the tilt lock and blow the seals.

Electric start and power tilt/trim all the way. The older T8 motor had tilt motor issues but I think that is all fixed on the T9.9:twocents:

My T8 is a 2004 and the power tilt has never failed and it has a ton of hours on it. Can’t imagine not having it.
Last I heard the T8 was discontinued and now is available as a 9.9 which is basically the same.

Order the power tilt.

My T-8 is 2003. Never a tilt problem. Use a Mariner 15 for a kicker when I first got boat. Pain to tilt the motor by hand. Electric start, power tilt are necessary in my view. Only problems I have had in all the years is couple times having to clean the idle jet. Is so tiny any stuff that gets through the line plugs it somewhat. Added an inline filter inside the cover. Shifter corroded and broke in handle. Replaced handle part and shift cable.

I've had a bit of trouble with my '05 T8 and replaced the tilt-trim assembly (~$900) after a few years due to seal problems. The newer unit started acting up several years ago but this time it was the electric motor so I swapped in the old one. Lately it will intermittently fail but recover with a tap or two on the motor, probably the brush contacts.

That’s crazy. A 900 dollar piece for a 3000 dollar motor. Only the power head should cost that much.

My PT on my Merc PK is still working after 9 years, salt water and all. I hate that piece of crap motor, but the electric start and PT make it at least tolerable. If it didn't have those features, I'd pay someone to steal it.

I felt the same way about the 8hp Merc I had on my Jetcraft. It always ran but never as well as I wanted it to. Tried every trick in the book to make it troll slowly but it always had a mind of its own.
