Yamaha 8HP Oil Mix Ratio?

Just purchased a used 2000 Yamaha 8hp 2stroke and noticed in the Owners Manual found on the Yamaha website that they say to use a 100:1 oil mix ratio. All the small Evinrude/Johnson 9.9/15's I've owned have all been 50:1 mix ratios. What's different about this Yamaha that they say to use a 100:1 ratio?

J/E switched to 100:1 for a short time too, but went back to 50:1 due to issues with not enough oil residue in the motor when stored. Many people run their trolling motors (all brands) on leaner ratios than 50:1 because at low RPM's there isn't a need for much oil.

Yamaha Feels 100:1 is fine for these motors and I haven't heard of any issues related to oil since they started recommending it many many years ago.

Below this is directly from Yamaha
CAUTION:
ECM00010
Use only new clean gasoline which has been stored in clean containers and is not contaminated with water or foreign matter.

Gasoline
If knocking or pinging occurs, use a different brand of gasoline or premium unleaded fuel.
Gasohol
There are two types of gasohol: gasohol containing ethanol and that containing methanol. Gasohol containing ethanol can be used if ethanol content does not exceed 10% and the fuel meets minimum octane ratings.
Yamaha does not recommended gasohol containing methanol because it can cause fuel system damage or engine performance
problems.

Engine oil
If the recommended engine oil is not available, another 2-stroke engine oil with an NMMA-certified TC-W3 rating may be used.

Recommended gasoline:
Regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 86 (Pump Octane Number) = (R+M)/2
Recommended engine oil:
YAMALUBE 2-stroke outboard motoroil

They can do as they want and usually do and those motors are designed to run that way- I would use their oil and follow directions explicitly!

Another vote for 4 cycle motors and in hi-thrust models they work just fine.

I have the same motor but it is a 1993. On the front it says 100:1 so its ok to run her that lean. With that said you can also run 50:1 with it and I have been doing that since I ran mine last week with 50:1 for the first time in years.

Thanks guys!

Motor will be primarily used trolling for kokanee & trout. Will see how it runs with the ratio at 100:1 first - hopefully it'll smoke a little less. I can always split the difference and run 75:1 to be safe I guess.
