I have fished for about 10 days off and on. Yesterday I landed 82 bass from shore in two locations. I could have got near 100 but the wind was too much! And about a week ago while fishing out of my pontoon boat I landed 52 bass in one day. I also had days with 47, 37, 25 & 17 plus more!

First for people that do not know me I was a Bass Guide for over 10 years on Silver Lake Washington state. I am just a fisherman like you! I love the sport more than most things I have done in my life and I have given back to the sport I love! You can find my Silver lake (Cowlitz co.) MAP on google just type silver lake map and it will be on the second page. I also have written a book on Silver Lake! Try google search by typing Silver lake and bass behavior. Or email me at exbassguide@gmail.com
So I have worked hard over the last 20 years on dialing in the smallmouth bass spawn on the Columbia River.
Almost every year the spawn activity starts around the middle of May This year blew my mind, it was way early for the bass to move to the spawning areas by a week or more. This spring has been a COLD one and I would not think this would be the case but it was. I will be studying this for years to fully understand the dynamics of this early movement! Over the last five plus years of fishing the spawn my time has been curtailed by caring for a good friend with cancer. That person has passes and so I have made up for lost time!
Lets talk about the lures I use and I will tell you now that most bass fishermen never fish some of the lures I use!
My number one lure (of many) for numbers but it also performs darn well for overall size of the bass but it is not my number one lure for size. My #1 smallmouth bass lure for production of numbers is (older Ifishers know!) is the three inch senko type lure. If you have never fished it you are missing out! This bait is in my large mouth bass top three most productive lures under open water conditions. My number two most productive bait is a skirted Ned Jig!
The Ned Jig is my number one best bait for overall size of the bass. The smallmouth like the berkley Flicker Shad crank bait. Bright colors early and natural colors mid-day,
Lets go into colors that worked best for me this year and most years. I have a mostly clear senko with silver flecks. I thinks it is a good representative of a smolt that are in the Columbia River near the spawn. I have very good luck with chartreuse earlier in the morning. Mid day clear/white still produces as does more natural colors like browns and greens and I die my clear senkos Blood red and they love that color to (it is "Dip-it" red).
One area I fished on the day I got 82 bass from shore was a spawning area and another was in a stronger current area. The current was strong but near shore was slower so the bass did not have to work so hard out in the heavier currents. most of the bass I got there were withing 20 feet of shore. and in about 5 to 15 feet deep.
ALL 82 BASS LANDED USING SMALL SENKO TYPE LURES!!!!!!

Let me tell you my findings about snow pack and wet spring impact on the smallmouth spawn. This is an educated guess with evidence that shows me I am on the right track with this topic. Heavy snow pack or wet springs like we just had increase the amount of water in the Columbia River and that equals more current. The current moves the bass more near the shore during pre-spawn and spawn. when the bass are near the shore line they can find warmer water from spawning areas so they move in (maybe even early like this year)! For dryer springs and low snow pack the current is slower and more bass spawn out in the river a bit more. My finding show me many more landed fish with high current years!

This is the NED JIG and TRD from Zman lures!!!!!!!
This is my #1 cold early season lure and one of my best smallmouth lures! And the large mouth bass LOVE them too!!! When to fish this bait for large mouth bass: Early spring!!! and when fishing a tuff!!! or open water spots like hagg lake has fish it near wood in early SPRING And hang on! THIS IS MY #2 most productive bait!!!
Another time this bait is the bomb is when you are trying to pattern the bass. This bait will get you more bites faster than any other! So you can find what depth the bass are holding, what color they like best and what kind of cover they are holding on. Once you have all that information then you can upsize you lures and target monsters!!!!!!
Tell me what you think of the information in the post! Discussions on bass fishing helps everyone understand bass even better!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. if you would like to know Silver Lake better lets go fishing and I can open your eye or at least help you in some way! If you would like more incites into bass lets go fishing! I am not a guide and I do not charge for fishing trips. It helps if you bring your boat or send me an email

Thank you for such an awesome thread. It is super generous of you to openly share a few of your bass secrets. I look forward to the spring bass spawn every year like a kid waiting for Christmas.

My own spring smallmouth techniques have parallels to yours, mostly fishing from the bank to fish wadeable sloughs and backwaters. I also love the Ned Rig. It is something I learned to use on a trip together with @rollcast. He slayed them with the Ned and was kind enough to pass a couple over to me to try. It is now a regular part of my repertoir.

I do carry carry 3" senko, but lean toward 4" watermelon and white laminate this time of year. It helps me to fight the wind and the current a little better. It sounds like I need to give the 3" Senko more playing time as well. Are you fishing the 3" senko weightless, or using some weight to get it down closer to the bottom faster and easier?

I am very interested in fishing together sometime, so I can learn new approaches to bass from your experience. Maybe we could trade fishing trips. We could do a day on your water, and another day of drift boat smallmouth fishing in my boat on the John Day. I will send you a PM.

I use hollow pencil lead and make SMALL WEIGHTS and I make several sizes for different conditions like current and or wind!

Many times, over the years I have held a "Near the waters edge Bass Classes" for free. The class included free lures, maps and hand outs of the information covered in the class. And also one on one instruction for people that needed more help to catch bass. Most of the time everyone caught bass. I will continue to do this because of my love for the sport and the joy is has brought me over the years. I have some very special places I take people to learn to catch good numbers of bass!
I also POUND some spots around the spawn every Friday to protect the bass from the frying pan. After a couple days the bass are back at it hot and heavy!!!!!

From first hand knowledge I will say Roger is a solid dude. I'm glad to see you back up and getting out there. I know you went through tough stuff not too long ago. That beard is getting a little white though sir! It's probably 15 years ago now I took Roger up on his offer to go fishing. Took him out on the Columbia in my Lund at the time. He did a lot of teaching, willing to show me lots of spots and what to look for to find my own. He did out fish me hands down but he let me catch a few too.

I've since switched boats and the new one is not much for running shore lines but I miss bassin'. I may have to get my but in gear and just get some shore fishing setups going.

Again - glad to see you getting out there and enjoying the van life. Be well and tight lines!

Nice post. Reminds of about 30 years ago, first, I suck at bass fishing, catch them, but not with a good ratio. One spring at Lake Don Pedro, somewhat after the spawn as the babies were bigger. could not Get through the babies. Probably caught a 100+ bass and one blewbill that day. Every fish including the bluegill was the same size. Maybe 5ā€. Probably should hire a guide to show me how.
