I have fished for about 10 days off and on. Yesterday I landed 82 bass from shore in two locations. I could have got near 100 but the wind was too much! And about a week ago while fishing out of my pontoon boat I landed 52 bass in one day. I also had days with 47, 37, 25 & 17 plus more!
First for people that do not know me I was a Bass Guide for over 10 years on Silver Lake Washington state. I am just a fisherman like you! I love the sport more than most things I have done in my life and I have given back to the sport I love! You can find my Silver lake (Cowlitz co.) MAP on google just type silver lake map and it will be on the second page. I also have written a book on Silver Lake! Try google search by typing Silver lake and bass behavior. Or email me at exbassguide@gmail.com
So I have worked hard over the last 20 years on dialing in the smallmouth bass spawn on the Columbia River.
Almost every year the spawn activity starts around the middle of May This year blew my mind, it was way early for the bass to move to the spawning areas by a week or more. This spring has been a COLD one and I would not think this would be the case but it was. I will be studying this for years to fully understand the dynamics of this early movement! Over the last five plus years of fishing the spawn my time has been curtailed by caring for a good friend with cancer. That person has passes and so I have made up for lost time!
Lets talk about the lures I use and I will tell you now that most bass fishermen never fish some of the lures I use!
My number one lure (of many) for numbers but it also performs darn well for overall size of the bass but it is not my number one lure for size. My #1 smallmouth bass lure for production of numbers is (older Ifishers know!) is the three inch senko type lure. If you have never fished it you are missing out! This bait is in my large mouth bass top three most productive lures under open water conditions. My number two most productive bait is a skirted Ned Jig!
The Ned Jig is my number one best bait for overall size of the bass. The smallmouth like the berkley Flicker Shad crank bait. Bright colors early and natural colors mid-day,
Lets go into colors that worked best for me this year and most years. I have a mostly clear senko with silver flecks. I thinks it is a good representative of a smolt that are in the Columbia River near the spawn. I have very good luck with chartreuse earlier in the morning. Mid day clear/white still produces as does more natural colors like browns and greens and I die my clear senkos Blood red and they love that color to (it is "Dip-it" red).
One area I fished on the day I got 82 bass from shore was a spawning area and another was in a stronger current area. The current was strong but near shore was slower so the bass did not have to work so hard out in the heavier currents. most of the bass I got there were withing 20 feet of shore. and in about 5 to 15 feet deep.
