I did a search on this but didn't find much. Could be one of those "nobody knows and the sturgeon aren't talking" things. Salmon, steelhead and many other fish go for insects on the surface, but this doesn't seem the case with the gators. Could it be an air / ballast thing?

Speculation covers the gamut. Could be they are trying to lose parasites, loosing egg masses, maybe just for fun?

The Chamber Of Commerce pays them to show themselves every so often! Kinda a tourism, pass me another pop and the Doritos, we aint leaving just yet sort of thing.

Cohos get most of the money in October. At least inland they do.

On the coast the fall nooks are on the books too. From Sept 20- Thanksgiving. I think they are in the Local K-16 hall. You may want to check on the hall though.

If the sturgies did it year round, their contract requires we buy them sunglasses. Ever price Foster Grants for a fish? It's cheaper to pay the K-16s than it is to purchase safety equipment.

It is either that, or they just wanna come up for a look see at whats happening up top.

Well, them sturgeon are bottom feeders, spend all there time on the bottom of the river. You know how dirty it is down there? I think they just come on up every now and then, take a little jump to get some of the gunk off of them.

A old fisherman at the Fishery told me the only good thing about Sturgeon jumping is you know there in there :shrug:

Sturgeon don't just jump. We saw an over size on the Chehalis surface with just her head out of the water.... she looked around just like we see Orca's do.

I wonder if they are jumping when bait fish are around to stun/injure them?

Onepump: Lamprey are not parasitic in fresh water so they are not attached to the outside of sturgeon. However, lamprey are a delicacy to sturgeon so they for sure will be on the inside. :grin:

I don't know but I'm sure glad they do. I love seeing them jump when their on the end of my line. The big ones remind me of whales jumping.

Somebody once told me they jump to knock the lampreys off, but I don't know if this is true.
STG Rule would be a good one to ask.
