I am going down to Garibaldi to fish the pond early in the morning. :meme:

I live in Portland. Where can I find some good herring? Last trip out, the herring I bought smelled freezer burnt and was very soft. :shrug:

If I cannot find some good herring, does brining them make them workable?:help:

I was having to throw mine on rock salt to try and toughen them up.....but, I did better running a blue/silver coyote spoon this weekend...didn't have to mess with bait....

Nope. If it's crap going into the brine its gonna be crap coming out. Maybe a little firmer version of the crap that went in, but if you put makeup on a pig, it's still a pig.

Sorry I cant help you with a good location. It's been a rough year.

I had the same question. GI Joes didn't have any. I settled on some from BiMart. I'm salting it now. Where can one find some decent bait in Newport?

Dixiefisher and I used similar setups on Sunday out of Astoria with the exception of bait. He used the blue/silver coyote spoon and I used small herring and anchovies. His pole had probably 30% more take downs than mine. Some because of the time it takes to bait and deploy herring where he was able to keep his spoon wet. That spoon also caught the big fish of our day (he let me reel it in).

Skip the bait and go with the spoons.
