Unusual injury on bass I caught?

Wanted to test my new electric motor and homemade mount, so Monday I headed up the river. First time taking my dog in the boat, and she was a big help! Launched at LePage park and started fishing the cliffs and rock formations along the Oregon side of the Columbia. I had forgotten how much more fun it is bass fishing from the boat, and having the electric motor to keep my location made it even better! The 55 lb thrust was able to push my 19' boat easily, until the wind made it to hard to fish anyway.
The bite was on from the start, hit the water about 10:00 am and first cast fish on. A lot of weeds, and nets, but my best fish came from the areas between the rocks and weeds. Most bites came before hitting bottom, and the water depth didn't seem to matter. Usual small plastics for me, started with a ned rig (shad colored) that was doing well. Then seeing the fish spitting up small whole crawdads, I put a Z-Man TRD CrawZ (green pumpkin orange) on my ned rig.
That was the winner for the day. Fish size was all over the place, largest just under 2 lbs. Several times I had wolfpacks of fish following in the one hooked. Wind blew me off the river around 2:30, but managed 31 for the short day.
One little guy had a large notch in it's back. Fought well, and seemed healthy otherwise, and swam away fine to fight another day. Any ideas as to what would cause this injury?

That seems odd...especially odd that the fish survived and lead a healthy life after such an injury. I caught a pretty nice largemouth years ago on Lk. Sammamish that had the top 1/3 of the tail missing. A bit bloody, it wasn't unlike the wear from fanning a nest. I figured it was a bird or river otter bite. Large numbers of eagles and GBH there.

It was strange, as the skin and some scales had grown back over the area. Must have happened awhile ago to have the dark skin covering, but the wound must have been deep, and sharp edged? The osprey, or eagle suggestion would make sense. Bird grabs fish, lands in tree over water, one big bite and bass struggles and manages to get free? Well I will never know, but thought it was worth sharing.
Now to get ready for more fishing tomorrow. Supposed to be less wind, and my daughter has the day off.
