I had a chance to get down to the Astoria area for the first time this year to fish for the ever cunning and tasty sturgeon with a few of my good buddies this week. We fished both Wed & Fri with mixed results.
Wed had some great fishing. Steve, Chris, Bobby and I got on the water at the crack of 10 AM after stopping for breakfast at Camp 18. If you ever order biscuts and gravy get a half order because the full one must weigh 200 lbs!
We got out on the water and dropped anchor in the first spot... 30 minutes go past and no action so we pull anchor and move a couple 100 yards. A little while later Mr. Sturg decides to come calling. I just love these estuary fish they just hammer the bait.
Ok, not bad, get the bait back out and this little beauty comes calling. This fish put up a real battle making several runs and clearing the water 3 times. The picture does not really show this fish off but it was decent and some real nice fillets came off of him... mmmmmmm just had some for dinner, sturg the "other, other" wihte meat!
Next it was Chris' turn to do battle with the most ancient of advisaries and boated this decent keeper.
Then finally Steve got in on the action with this keeper. Dont tell anyone but Steve's "Fishing Dad" helped him set the hook on this one as Steve is... ummmmmm... let's say a little on the "special" side when it comes to sturgeon fishing, but he did a dandy job once the fish was on the hook!
We had quite a few other chances with some missed epic pound downs but when all is said and done a boat limit of tasty sturgeon is not a bad days fishing this early in the year.
Now to today... it started out all wrong. Chris wanted to get on the water at the crack of dawn so Chris, ZaQ, Reed (one of Chris's friends) and I met at 3:30... YIKES! I was urinating up a rope about it all morning because I only had a few hours sleep, Chris had less and ZaQ well he did not sleep at all, that is before we met.
When we got out on the water we could not find the fish. We must have pulled anchor and moved 15 times with no luck. We finally did find the hot spot but just as the tide was turning and the bite died. I did manage one shaker but that was it for the entire day.
Since the day was slow I took pictures of the scenery
ZaQ decided the heck with fishing and fell asleep... funny last time I saw a flap like that it had a hook in it!
And Chris decided he did not want to waste the extra fresh bait... hey those tate better with some crakers and cheese
A fun couple of days on the water even though the fishing could have been better today. This time of year you really have to hunt up those packs of fish but when you find them hold on and have some fun. All of our fish came in 5'-12' of water on either sand shrimp, anchovies, squid or combos there of.
