I was just wondering if anyone out there was using circle hooks instead of double hooks normally used in tuna clones? I know marlin guys use the circle hooks but wanted to get some thoughts as I prepare my gear for the season...
Tuna trolling gear-double hooks or single circles?

Are you planning to use blue cord or rod & reel for trolling?
Double hooks work great on blue cord, better grip when hoisting the fish over the side of the boat
I have used circle hooks when trolling for our local albacore, they work fine
I prefer quality J-hooks for rod & reel trolling, once in a while I have had tuna get off double hooks when I leave them hanging while getting a bait/jig stop going
Circle hooks excel on the troll when you are being selective about what you want to kill, and especially in catch and release situations
On all my clones I rig up my self, I now use a double barbed hook with a small SNAP TIE around the shank . Started doing this after losing the fight after more than 20 min. with the biggest tuna I had ever layed eyes on ! The fish was hooked by only one side of the double hook and straighten out then pulled through the barrel swivel it was looped through . Got the whole lure back with no hook or fish . :bigshock:
Two pronged - minimum 10/0 - remove the barbs. I always thought they were called "fang" hooks. Single J hooks on diving plugs. Mix of large singles and trebles on diving plugs-jury still out on that. Singles are way easier to remove(from the fish and your hand or leg).
I prefer a siwash hook if rigging with a single hook. They tend to run straight and give better action to any lures or plugs than a standard J hook
