From our family's attic came this fiberglass boat rod. It was paired with a Penn Long Beach #60 reel.

What I find interesting is that that diameter, for a boat rod, is relatively small ~.375 at the butt. Total length is 5'4". Just three guides and tip. Do you think this is a solid fiberglass blank?

This was likely purchased in Portland or Astoria.

The custom wraps are a nice touch.

No maker's mark on it. Any idea who might have made it?

Most of the early fiberglass boat rods were solid glass. At least all the ones that we used were. Hard to tell the blank color in your photo, but if the blank is black it could be an early Harnell.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the blank color is black. (The color balance of the pics looked much better on my computer, then after uploading :shrug

Any guesses as to what time period this is from? Were these made locally or imported?

It's in surprisingly very good condition, even the rubber butt cap is intact and not cracking, so before retiring it to the wall, I'm planning to honor it by catching a few small sturgeon with it. I might re-coat the wraps too, although they're fully intact and not cracking or fraying...it just seems like they're treated with color preserver but lack an overcoat of clear.
