Tackle Storage on the Boat

I've got a new North River Seahawk and I'm hitting a wall when it comes to an organized and out-of-the-way method for storing tackle. Putting seats on the rear boxes kinda killed my plan of using the boxes for organizing all my Plano 3700 boxes. Or at least I can't visualize how to make it work anymore. I guess I could just toss them in there but that is neither organized nor convenient since I can't see the entire contents of the seat box when I open the lid.

How do you guys do it on your boats, especially those of you with seats on the rear boxes and not benches?

I have the kid throw them all in. When I need something I hold out my hand and say, " Give me the leader box."

Then I just keep holding my hand out and soon enough the leader box appears in my hand. Same with the Mag lips box, or the sturgeon box. It's a pretty handy system if you are not in to big a hurry.

It looks like the seats sit on wood tops. Maybe you can hing them in the front so the seat tips forward and you can go back to plan A? They do make slide in units for the Plano boxes that you could cut into the face of the seat box. I change tactics constantly so I am one of those guys with a dozen different tackle boxes that changes them out as needed. Sometimes simple is better.

On my split seats the seat side of the bench is hinged so I can have full access to the bench storage.

If yours isn't set up that way then I'd put the most used stuff where you can easily get at it.

Assuming you have a transom and floor fish box- most fisheries you will only use one for actual fish. On this fisheries I throw my Plano boxes in the floor and use the transom box for fish.

I don't keep any tackle on board that isn't germane to the days fishing.

Similiar here. I do keep a well stocked box of hardware, swivels, hooks leader, pliers, scissors under the bow. For each trip out I just grab the Plano box or 2 that applies.

Your question is to me two parts; where do I store gear and tackle, and how do I store my tackle?

The boat I now own has tons of storage so much so that items can be lost at times. I've now finally decided (at least for now) to designate the port box under the bench seat for clothing and lunch bags. The starboard seat box are fenders, lines, Ace Line Hauler, buckets and cleaning gear. Under the front deck (which is huge) is little used items like spare filters, extra rods and again junk. All tackle goes overhead along both sides. I gave up on tackle boxes and have gone to using both small flat compartment boxes and small snap storage boxes the size of shoe boxes. These boxes each have specific gear such as one has only divers, flashers and dodgers, one has hooks, snaps and bait rigs. By doing this I can see what is in the box and one box like the hook box has everything to replace cut off gear in a hurry. The other plus is, if its rough and the box dumps over I don't have a mess to clean up. My brother in law once lost his big Plano off the bench seat and we ended up with half of Cabala's store on the deck.

For salmon, I have very little extra tackle on the boat but I do have several pre-rigged rods. A small spinner box, a lead box, two or three extra flashers and dodgers in ziplock bags. Actually two lead boxes, one is cannon balls for trolling and one has pyramids for casting. A leader pack with extra lead droppers and flasher spacers. Don't do the plug or wobbler stuff so that saves room. Nothing goes on the boat that wouldn't have a high expectation of being used that day/season.

Like the other guys said, I limit tackle to that which is needed for the day. I have a tackle box which contains everything but lures, such as leader, terminal tackle, hooks, etc. Then lures are stored in plano plastic boxes and brought as needed.

I took a cheap plastic bin that I got from Walmart and basically lined my storage with it so that the 3600 or 3700 boxes can be stood up without sliding all over the place in the storage locker. Then just label the out facing side of the tackle box with what's in it and you can quickly reach in and pull out the right box without digging through everything to find the right box.

I'd hate to be without my bait/rigging station. This holds all the rigging hardware, hooks, leader spools, tools, scents that we're using constantly throughout the day.

I have bench seats so Plano and clear storage boxes hold all the lures, flashers etc, there. Tackle goes under one seat. Safety gear, first aid kit, spare rain gear, odds & ends go under the other.

The bow compartment holds the tool kit, towing bridle and accessories, box of extra sinkers; last items to go in so they can be first out are all the life jackets.

My Seahawk has 5 fish boxes I'll never need 5 fish boxes so I made one of the transom boxes tackle storage area lead tray a small bucket to hold flashers and a couple Plano boxes that get swapped out for fish specific days works for me I also have pre tied leaders on a pool noodle in there in the middle of the stern is a bait board everything is in one area easy to switch gear out and don't need to dig around looking for anything, if I do need the fish box for tuna or something I simply remove the gear and boom it's a fish box still!

I don't really think 4 or 5 Plano 3700 boxes is "too much" tackle. Those K15s and MagLip 4.5s take up a lot of room, and one whole box is just terminal tackle.

Having trouble finding a hatch style organizer that'll fit in my boxes since they're only 10" tall. Maybe I'll see if Miller Marine can make me a pair that'll fit and hold 3-4 boxes each.
