Depends on what radio you have. The lower channel number for the FRS radio service is shared by GMRS. The GMRS radio service allows higher transmit power output (up to 5 watts in the US) GMRS and FRS share channels 1-7. So really if you have a GMRS highpower radio channels 1-7 will work better. With your talkabout I don't think they are sophistacated enough to change power because you are on another channel. FRS Radios started out with 1/4 watt transmitters way back when. Some are 1/2 watt and 1 watt now. So again depends on which one you have - there are some threads in the hunting page on Rino radio and 14 mile radio I think.

When it comes to radios there are no dumb quesions - glad to help if I can

GMRS or General Mobile Radio Service - share some channels with FRS channels 1-7. GMRS also has the ability to use repeaters (channels 15-22 I think). Need a license for GMRS - yes - does everyone need one - lets just say the FCC site on it is as clear as mud FCC GMRS enforcable - they can - do they - I doubt they have time, but could if cases of interference are reported.

Wish I had clearer answers for you
