I just moved to Idaho from Oregon and I'm coming back for a wedding in Portland. I wanted to stop and fish the Deschutes somewhere within and hour of I-84. Are the steelies in the river yet or are they a later summer run? If so, are there any decent stretches or favorite flies someone would care to share? If not, I'll fish for some redbands. Thanks for the info.

They are in. Just park at Moody, and walk up from there.

Yes, the steelies are in!
We got to the river at about 4pm yesterday. It was 99 degrees on the thermometer. Hiked up from the mouth to the secret spot.

Caught and released one 6# native and a 17" redside. Also, had another 6-7# steelie on that did not want to be caught.

It was a great river fix.
There is nothing like the Deschutes!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, the Deschutes rules. I decided at 10:30 Fri night to go up on Sat. Got there at five a.m, rode up a few miles and proceeded to hook 6 steelies, landed three and kept one, all by 11:00. Also caught more trout than I have ever caught before, all on the same spinner. Not a bad day. Drove past Drano on the way back and was told it was kind of slow, but don't really know that for sure.
