I got my first salmon / steelhead rod this spring,

are there clips or something to connect the two piece together for storage ?

I have also seen some people put cotton balls on the connecting piece is that a good idea?

Hair ties from the dollar store.

I'm not sure I understand the cotton ball thing but if the idea is to put a cotton ball in the ferrule that seems like a bad idea to me.

Get yourself a cloth rod sock that has separate sections for each half of the rod. Store the rod inside the rod sock, then inside a PVC tube when not in use and for transporting to and from the river. Do it this way and the rod will last you a lifetime with no issues, and if you decide to sell it and upgrade someday you will get top dollar because the rod will look brand new.
Check out “Fishing Butlers.” They are small diameter bungee cords with a padded adjustable connector. They are a few bucks a set. They cinch down on each end of the 2 rod pieces and can be used to hang the rod on hooks or nails. They don’t offer any protection like the system Nor Cal suggested though.
