Re: Sportsman's Warehouse to close 23 stores

Here is a link to the newest, updated, news station article I could find:
http://www.localnews8.com/global/story.asp?s=9975592

The Pocatello store is just one of 23 stores nationwide that will be closing. A majority of the stores closing are located in the east. There are a total of 67 Sportman's in the country.
He jokingly said, "we didn't get our share of the stimulus."

Re: Sportsman's Warehouse to close 23 stores

I bet the Vancouver store will go before the PDX store... Never figured out why they opened one in that location in the first place....
Well, considering there are 3 stores within 50 miles of each other, if you count Salem, I would think the Portland store being in the middle would be most likely. I have no idea which one has the most traffic and business. I can't see all 3 making it through this unscathed.

Oh man...oh man....Let's pray that those closures really do end up in the East as they stated in the article. I mean I hate for any of them to close, but please...please...please not the Salem store! I can barely fathom a world with no G.I. Joes and no Sportman's....help me.

If it was me I'd drop the Vancouver store. It probably dont get many people from the north, they have Bob's in Longview. Its pretty easy to drive to Oregon to Fishermans, or Sprotsmans on Johnson creek and you dont have to pay tax. I only go to the Vancouver store to window shop or for small stuff. Any trip I plan on spending more than maybe $100 I drive south to avoid the tax.

Re: Sportsman's Warehouse to close 23 stores

The one in my town is closing, not surprised they haven't done a good job since it opened keeping it stocked. Too bad for the employees. We've also lost our mom/pop stores due to family changes and the opening of the warehouse, so we'll be down to Walmart and Kmart for fishing gear. I can't see Kmart lasting much longer, not that they have much in the way of gear anyway. Guess I'll send more of my money out of state. Oh well I've got a gift cert and a hankering for that Ruger, better make up my mind quickly.

I hope they keep the Vancouver store. I don't care about paying tax. I gladly trade tax costs for sitting in traffic. Everyone keeps mentioning Fishermans, everything I have ever bought there has cost more then Joes or SW.

Thank the Maker that Salem made the list too....yahoo! :applause: Hopefully the UFA keeps it intact for the most part and just changes the name.

By the way, WildernessHunter, thanks for the update.

Will be interesting to see if the new ownership is an improvement or not.

I wonder if they have the same Walmart type stocking setup where they cary the same stuff in all stores regardless of its relevance to the local area?

Looks like Sportsman's will be more of a regoinal enterpise like Les Schwab. There is a fairly tight holding of stores in the northwest. Making distribution of product more cost effective. Makes me think that the northwest is the best part of their operation...which is good for us! There are 30 stores not on either list...not closing or being sold. Those might be the best of the lot.

Goes to show that Cabella's was smart to limit their density of stores. Remember that the expansion effort of Tom Peterson's was the nail in his coffin. Get too greedy during peak economic times and you are not able to survive a slowdown. Sporting goods are a luxury item too...not a necessity...at least to some:D
