What oil do you use in a boats hydraulic steering system (outboard).I have power steering fluid (automobile type) in the garage, along with automatic transmission fluid. Either of those work? Or do I need somthing special and probably expensive just for the boat?

Thanks! Appriciate any responses in the next 2 hours.

I don't know the answer  , I can tell you I have a sterndrive with Hydraulic steering, and I use the merc/quicksilver product. Do I need it? I have just used it from the beginning, didn't want to screw something up
. You typically shouldn't need much volume so the cost thing is really no big deal. I think I'm on my first bottle, with a 3 year old boat. I believe it's power trim and steering fluid.

Do not use automobile power steering fluid. You need special hydraulic fluid for those systems. And it is not cheap. Call one of the boat dealers or repair places.
