That’s ridiculous! I know a guy that was calling for coyotes one day. A bear came in to his call and grabbed his $500 new fox pro and took off running. Long story short, he shot the bear, out of season, to save his call. The next day he went to ODWF and told the story exactly as it happened. He was fined a total of $1,040. An automatic fine of $800 for killing a bear out of season and $240 for wonton waste of the bear. This was 10 years ago.

Oops, misread. Or read what I wanted.
Well there is the probation clause, so if he gets caught again, yeah it could be 10 months in jail.

Yeah, that sentence and fine is pretty pathetic. Only thing that I can possibly think is they had a shoddy case against him at best and wanted to get him for at least something?

Heck he could've MADE money with the cash rewards by killing that bull illegally then turn himself in!

The special DA assists in the prosecution of complex cases where the locals don't have the resources / expertise.
So perhaps I should have included "request to assist" since apparently the local DA/judge/Trooper didn't ask for help in making the case - especially since he pleaded.

Penalties are set within Oregon Statutes and applied by the presiding Judge. IF you think this offender should have gotten 10-months, then you need to change Oregon's sentencing guidelines. Talk to your legislator.
There has been a big push over the 5-10 years to increase penalties; OHA did a big push to get 'trophy' and associated fines added. Presumably his pleading guilt got him something. The basic Class A misdemeanor MAXIMUM, which this would appear, to be is $6250. Perhaps too the Commission did not go looking for damage restitution - that alone for elk is $5k; $15k if it is a 6-pt.
It is apparent that at $400 and 10-days, there was determined to be some financial hardship involved? He was a hunter though as there is some social media out there associated with his name. Google turned up info from at least 2017.

Does a person get a response if they request of the court the reasoning behind a ruling/judgement?

It is a 6 point. The guy must be somebody's nephew or brother in law.

Ha! That’s a pretty ridiculous story. I’m guessing the OSP officer thought as much too.

Still baffle on this one.

1.Looks to be a 6 point bull? 4th broke near main beam?

2.No tag

3.Shot outside of a legal season

4.Left to rot after shooting it

Even if it was a spike bull or cow the sentence is outrageous

Someone I know of got in more trouble over a turkey 10-12 years back

3 years no hunting, and around $1500 in fines

There was just a post on Ifish where a guy shot over his limit of ducks

Lost his hunting privileges, and 20 preference points.

I wonder if the post from OSP is missing some other parts of his sentence, like hunting right suspended

If that is the case.. then he should have assisted on a case in lane county.. where our county DA dismissed a like 3 year old case with an outfitter that had a ton of wildlife crimes pending.. lets just face it they dont care much about the wildlife as us and the troopers do.. something needs to be done to hold these people accountable, especially repeat offenders. I myself would love the idea about there points becoming the tippers points depending on severity of said wildlife crime.. either way, they need to do more. There is a reason it runs rampant, they know its mostly a slap on the wrist

I think ODFW should be involved in major poaching cases so the outcome doesn't end up being discussed like this on the internet.

Cases like this need to be brought to the attention of the state attorney general so somebody with some clout can insure it doesn't happen again. In this case, the court was just as guilty as the poacher.

that would be nice. a pipe dream, but I agree, it should be the way.

.... brought to the attention of the state attorney general .....
I was going to note the propensity of the OAG to occupy her time in other 'immediate' defenses but figured it would go too political and get this shut-down....so, I'll agree with @killaz and leave it at 'pipe dream'.

I may put in a simple inquiry to OSP tropper for that area and the Union Cty DA for some insight - this is rather intriguing and something has to be missing.
